Food Elements – Learn About the Nutritional Elements of Food and Healthy Eating

The purpose of consuming food is to ensure good health and wellness, and therefore, healthy eating is an essential aspect of eating every day. The requirement of food over the years changes over time, with respect to the stage of life that you are in. So while a child requires food to grow and develop, adults need it more for the energy required to function daily. In addition to that, food is also required so as to repair the various parts of the body that are worn away, or those that have had to be discarded due to wear and tear.

We tend to use various parts of our bodies with everything that we do, be it breathing, thinking, moving, playing or working on the computer. This means that we need to be able to continuously replenish our body with a variety of elements that are present in food and drink.

The various elements of food that exist, their characteristics, the manner in which they can be used, and the right way in which specific foods should be combined to obtain maximum benefits are given below:

The Food Elements

Healthy eating is possible only when you ensure that your body is getting the right food elements in the right quantity that it requires. Therefore, it is essential to know about the food nutrition to be able to make sure that you are consuming everything. Some of the food elements that you should be aware of include starch, sugar, albumen, fats, minerals, and indigestible ingredients.

These are often clubbed together to form the basic classes including carbonaceous, nitrogenous, and inorganic. While all the starches, fats and sugars fall under the carbonaceous category, the albumen is considered to be nitrogenous. All inorganic substances include all the minerals that we need for the body. It should be noted that all healthy recipes or menus should ensure that all the various categories of food are finely balanced in a meal.

Carbonaceous – All starches, sugars and fats are covered under this category. Starch can be found in grains, most vegetables, and also in some fruits. Sugars are available in the form of cane, grape, other fruit sugars, and milk sugar (a constituent of milk). There are also some sugars that are made in the laboratory.

Glucose, for example, is an artificial sugar that is similar to grape juice. It is made from potato or corn starch in a chemical process. However, it is not as sweet as the natural sweeteners that nature provides. Fats can be found in vegetables and animal food too. Butter and suet are examples of animal fat, but you can also find fat in plant sources like nuts, beans and some fruits like olives too.

While fat is commonly used as a free element (as in butter) and we use it in many not-so-healthy recipes in abundance, not only is free fat difficult to consume, but it also interferees with the digestion of other foods.

Nitrogenous – Albumen in its purest form can be found in the white of an egg. The entire white of an egg is nothing but pure albumen. You can also find albumen in other animals and vegetable foods as in the case of oatmeal. Gluten close resembles albumen and is also a nitrogenous element. It is found in rye, barley and wheat. Casein is also a part of this class of food elements and can be found in peas and beans.

Inorganic – Almost all the foods we consume have a certain proportion of inorganic and mineral matter. Grains and milk have a large proportion of the minerals that we need on a daily basis.

Indigestible substances – These are foods that are not digestible by the body and are there before only meant to provide bulk to the food that we eat. Bran and fibrous tissues in the body are examples of indigestible foods.

Food Element Uses

Most of the food that we eat is carbonaceous in nature. This is something that has been proven after studying the daily eating habits of various cultures. The carbonaceous food element allows our body to produce heat, and in conjunction with other food elements, allows us to be able to use force and strength. Carbonaceous food elements also help the body replace the fatty tissue that gets used up in the process of fat burning.

While fats produce the highest amount of heat among the carbonaceous food elements, it should be remembered that these are most difficult to digest and can therefore lead to various health issues. Healthy eating deems that only the recommended proportion of fat should be included in meals on a daily basis.

The nitrogenous nutritional elements help in keeping the brain, nerves, and muscles healthy and fit. These are the food elements that …

The Three Types of Health We All Need

When we hear the word health, we probably think first of our physical health… Our mental health and our financial health come second and third.

But, as with all things, we should look for balance in life; and although our physical health is the most important of the three, it is good to realize that one without the other two does not make for a great life. We have to maintain all three if we are going to have the optimum existence; we must work at all three if we are to find any sort of peace in our daily lives.

Our physical health is the basis to our daily ability of movement and general achievement. If we are not physically healthy, it will effect both our mental and our financial health; if we feel unwell or unable, then we are mentally challenged through each day to overcome the pain we endure and the lack of movement we battle against. Added to this, we are less likely to be on our game when it comes to earning money and we are more likely to spend our time in medical treatment centers which will cost us money.

When it comes to our mental health, we are dealing with emotions, the most notoriously difficult aspect of our existence, the hardest thing to overcome, the most powerful part of any human; if we can learn to control or come to terms with our emotions then we have the ability to achieve anything; our mind is our strongest ally when it works for us and our biggest enemy when it conspires against us, it is the one thing we have with us all the time, chattering away, telling us that we can (or cannot) do something; our mind has the ability to cause illness or avoid illness, it has the strength to give us the adrenaline to enact feats of heroism or collapse into moments of weakness and desperation. Positive mental health is imperative if we are to be happy.

Financial health is the least important of the three, yet it has the power to breed confidence. If we are financially stable we have the ability to enjoy many forms of freedom, to experience numerous ways of life, to devour unending types of pleasure. However, the imbalance of financial ‘success’ can also cause enormous amounts of stress, the responsibilities mount up with the assets, the inequalities with our mental and physical health can grow more acute with the financial burdens. The other end of the scale is no more attractive – financial poverty often leads to mental and physical poverty too. Balance is essential if we are to find what we truly desire.

To achieve the balance required, to come to a place of physical, mental and financial health is not easy. We are (as in so many things) ‘miseducated’ about what we truly need and what we can truly do without; we are not encouraged to find a balance in life, we are generally pushed towards one type of health or the other by those around us or that voice within us, given a specific life goal we have to achieve at the expense of finding a healthy balance in all three.

Physical health is very possible by doing a few simple things; drink water, lots of it – not sodas, fruit drinks, power drinks or alcoholic drinks; exercise regularly – and by that I mean do something for your body everyday, stretch, yoga, weights, walk, run, swim, whatever, but something that raises your temperature, that gets the blood flowing and the fat burning, you will be glad you did; eat small amounts but often, begin to change your 3 meal a day habit – snack on healthy foods, eat fruits, vegetables and proteins and vary your diet so it becomes a lifestyle not a fad. If you do these three things, then you can also splurge on the treats like alcohol once in a while, resting after exercise and candy every few days (not hours); once you begin to exercise properly and ingest food regularly your body’s metabolism will work constantly and will devour whatever you put into it so that even the ‘bad things’ disappear more quickly, and either way, you will notice an improvement in your energy levels and a rise in your self esteem. But, as I said, it has to become a way of life, not a momentary fad, and as it becomes a way of life it will become easier and easier to continue being healthy.

Mental health is achievable by being objective with your life. Humans are a very subjective species (meaning that we see a situation from our point of view without looking at it from the outside); and this subjectivity renders us helpless when …

Source of Calcium Carbonate – Naturally Occurring Source of Calcium Carbonate

Calcium carbonate is found naturally as marble, limestone, chalk and aragonite. Eggshell is considered as a rich source of calcium carbonate and many people eat it to cure calcium deficiency in their body. Other sources include calcite and travertine. All these are naturally occurring substances and are used in making supplements and fertilizers as a source of obtaining calcium.

A source of calcium carbonate is known to reduce acidity. Because of this reason, this compound is an excellent candidate to be used in making calcium tablets or supplements. Most of the calcium supplements available on the market today are made with calcium carbonate or a variant on calcium carbonate known as coral calcium.

Coral calcium is a relatively less-known source of calcium carbonate. This salt is obtained from fossilized coral reefs in an environmentally friendly manner. As it is available above sea level, it is pure and free from impurities. Recently it has been discovered that coral calcium obtained from the island of Okinawa in Japan is the most refined form of this salt.

Okinawan coral calcium not only contains calcium carbonate as a source of calcium, but also many other important minerals and nutrients in just the right quantities. It is beneficial for long-term health as it serves to cure many diseases and also helps in overcoming calcium deficiency permanently.

Calcium supplements made with Okinawan coral calcium are now available on the market as a good source of calcium carbonate. They are made with totally natural substances including some vitamins as well to ensure proper absorption of calcium in the body. These vitamins provide some other benefits of their own in terms of treatment of various diseases and health conditions. There are no side-effects of these tablets and can be consumed by people of all ages without any reservation.

Normally 500 – 1000 mg of calcium can be obtained from supplements, but it is recommended to eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly along with consuming good-quality calcium tablets. In any case, do not consume more than 2500 mg of calcium in one day. Postmenopausal women are especially advised to increase their daily calcium intake through calcium supplements.

Carefully read the contents of a supplement product before using it. Although almost all ingredients are explained in detail on the Internet, it is preferable to consult a health specialist to ask about their effectiveness before starting the course. You may also want to have your serum calcium measured to determine how much calcium you should be consuming on a daily basis.

Things to Eat Or Drink to Help Bring Fertility Back – I Want to Get Pregnant Now!

There is not any one magic food recipe that will guarantee conception, but what you eat can increase your chance for conceiving. One thing you have to do is start eating healthy. Start by eating less meat and more vegetables. You should be eating a lot of green vegetables. If you are not big on vegetables, you can chop them up real small and add them to your meatloaf and you probably won’t even taste them.

Things to Eat Or Drink to Help Bring Fertility Back

It is good for you to drink plenty of green tea and Vitamin C too. Studies have shown that women who make these a part of their diet are more likely to become pregnant. Trans fat is something that you want to avoid whether you are trying to get pregnant or not. Trans fat is found in all kinds of foods. Here is a list of the top seven Trans fat foods.

1. Margarine – is loaded with trans fats and saturated fats, both of which can lead to heart disease. Look for soft-tub margarine because it is less likely to have trans fat.

2. Packaged foods – Cake mixes and other mixes have several grams of trans fat per serving. Look for reduced fat mixes.

3. Soups – Ramen noodles contain high levels of trans fat. See if you can find fat free or reduced fat soups.

4. Fast Food – Fries, chicken, and other foods are deep-fried in partially hydrogenated oil.

5. Frozen Food – Those delicious frozen pies, pot pies, pizzas, and waffles hs trans fat. In frozen foods, baked is always heart-healthier than breaded.

6. Baked Goods – More trans fat are used in baked products than any other foods.

7. Cookies and cakes from your local grocery have plenty of trans fat in them.

If you and your partner are really trying to get pregnant you should consider the importance of a healthy diet. Making small changes in what you eat and drink can make the difference between conceiving or not being able to conceive.

You don’t have to drastically change your diet to improve your chances of fertility, but one easy thing you can do is to drink more water. Drinking at least eight glasses of water daily will help to increase your fertility levels. Also, you should be eating high-fiber low-fat foods. This will improve your hormonal balance which will help your chances to conceive.

Add Color to Your Diet

You should eat more brightly colored fruits and vegetables. These foods are nutrient rich and have plenty of vitamin B and folic acid. These foods are essential for healthy sperm and ovaries. Fruits and vegetables also have plenty of vitamin C and iron. Both enhance the quality of sperm and improve the immune system. It is a good idea to include plenty of fruits in your diet.

Wholesome Grain Foods

Another food that you need to include for a healthy fertility diet are nutrient rich whole grains. These include brown rice, corn, whole wheat bread, millet, pasta, and oats. Whole grain foods are rich in vitamins E and B which are essential for the production of healthy eggs, hormone balance, and sperm.

Eat lots of Nuts!

Nuts contain natural plant proteins. Nuts and whole grains also contain vitamin B6 and folic acid which raise your fertility levels. Here are six of the healthiest nuts to eat.

1. Walnuts are a great source of healthy omega-3 essential fatty acids which have been found to protect the heart, promote better cognitive function, and provide anti-inflammatory benefits for asthma, rheumatoid arthritis, eczema and psoriasis.

2. Almonds contain almost 25 percent of your needed daily value for the important nutrient magnesium plus is rich in potassium, manganese, copper, the antioxidants vitamin E and selenium, and calcium.

The Cancer Prevention Diet: Lower Your Risks Today

Fighting cancer is hard, so why not do something to prevent it from occurring in the first place? More and more people are finding out that simple changes in diet and lifestyle are enough to drastically reduce their chances of getting all types of cancer. This can also work for those who have already been diagnosed by the disease and are seeking help from a naturopathic doctor.

In this case, the physician will tell you to remove foods that feed cancer and consume foods that boost your immune system and cleanse your body. This way, you can enhance your health and your ability to combat cancer.

The Ties Between Cancer and Your Diet

There’s plenty of evidence that links together what you eat with the development of cancer. This is great news for people who don’t mind exercising their free will to pick and choose better foods and drinks to consume. Your lifestyle choices also greatly affect your risks of getting cancer. Obviously, drinking too much alcohol and smoking cigarettes can also increase your chances of getting cancer.

If you don’t workout, this is inviting cancer to take over. You need to exercise to keep your vital organs doing what they do best – keeping you alive. Sedentary lifestyles lead to obesity, heart disease and diabetes, among other illnesses.

Eating organic foods is essential to keeping away harmful chemicals that can contribute to cancerous growths. Pesticides and herbicides are dangerous and accumulate in your body. This toxic buildup is what eventually allows cancer to form. Once it does, you will need to start eating and living better. You can also get help from one of the qualified alternative cancer treatment centers near you.

Do GMOs Cause Cancer?

There’s a lot of talk in the conventional and naturopathic doctor community regarding the dangers of genetically modified foods. This consists of plants and animals that have had their DNA altered to allow it to withstand droughts, cold weather and grow larger. They are also are designed to produce an insecticide to keep bugs from eating them.

The FDA insists that GMOs are safe for human consumption, however, these foods have only been placed in short-term studies. Animal tests have been done by independent scientists that reveal otherwise. It shows that GMOs can cause certain types of cancer. It also showed that even small amounts of pesticide can increase your risks of certain cancers, like breast cancer, leukemia, brain tumors, lymphoma, prostate cancer and brain tumors.

Now, let’s review what you can do to improve your diet to lower your risk of cancer.

Eat More Cancer-Fighting Fruits and Veggies

There’s no particular food you should be eating, but an assortment of fruits and veggies that help to combat cancerous growths is recommended. Eating a well-balanced whole food diet is still crucial. However, the following should definitely be implemented into your daily meals:

  • Broccoli
  • Spinach
  • Brussels sprouts
  • Carrots
  • Beans
  • Dark leafy greens
  • Tomatoes
  • Guava
  • Watermelon
  • Peas
  • Oranges
  • Berries

Eat Plenty of Fiber

Keeping a clean colon is essential for maintaining a healthy body. One way to do this is to consume lots of fiber. There are a variety of foods you can add to your breakfast, lunch, snacks and dinner to increase your intake of fiber, which can stem from whole grains, fruit, legumes and vegetables, such as the following:

  • Bran muffins
  • Brown rice
  • Apples
  • Pears
  • Bananas
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Bell peppers
  • Beans

Water should also be added – drink plenty of this to keep your body flushed of toxins and waste.

Cut Back On Processed and Red Meat

The number one issue with meat is that it processes through the body very slowly. This is because it lacks fiber, which as we see is essential for fighting cancer. Those who consume a lot of processed meats tend to have a higher risk of colon cancer. Then most processed meats are contaminated with pesticides, herbicides, GMOs and hormonal injections, which further increase your chances of developing cancer. Naturopathic doctors recommend choosing non-processed meat that is organic, grass-fed and contains no injected hormones or antibiotics.

Maternity or Pregnancy Insurance Options in North Carolina

If you are currently pregnant, your options, in order of desirability, are Medicaid, group insurance, and prepayment plans. After you are pregnant, it is not possible to issue an individual policy. Application will automatically be declined. If you are in the process of planning your pregnancy, the best options for minimizing your maternity costs are Medicaid, group insurance, individual insurance with Blue Cross Blue Shield, prepayment plans, in order of descending desirability.

The average total maternity charges submitted to Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina in 2007 was $20,015 per pregnancy 1. A patient may be required to pay this full amount, however many families negotiate with hospitals and providers to pay a discounted rate when the only option is to pay out of pocket.

When planning to cover the costs of maternity the four primary options in North Carolina are as follows:

1. Group maternity insurance coverage. This is often the most advantageous way to pay for maternity costs because many group policies cover maternity for all females on the policy without an additional rider. Also, if you are already pregnant, and don’t meet the income requirements for Medicaid, this is your best shot at getting your pregnancy covered by an insurance company. Additionally, some group policies do not consider pregnancy a preexisting condition, so this is a good option to consider if you are already pregnant.

After the charges have been submitted to the insurance company, it is worthwhile to ask the hospital if you can get a discount by paying the deductible in full as opposed to making payments over time. I am aware of instances where the deductible has been discounted for a prompt payment in full.

2. Individual maternity insurance coverage with Blue Cross Blue Shield. At the date of this writing, I am only aware of one individual health insurance company in North Carolina that offers coverage for maternity. The company is Blue Cross Blue Shield and the policies are Blue Advantage® and Blue Options HSA sm. I am not aware of any individual health insurance policy that will cover you after you are already pregnant. HumanaOne previously offered an individual maternity policy, but has since discontinued it. I am generally skeptical of small health insurance companies, if you are even able to find one that offers maternity, because they are often on tight budgets and as a result their policies often contain ungainly loopholes.

The Blue Cross Blue Shield individual policy is somewhat similar to a prepayment plan through a hospital, as the premiums for adding the maternity rider are fairly substantial. However, the benefit of the policy is that, in the event of a pregnancy that involves complications, your costs are much more predictable. Pregnancies with complications are often significantly more expensive than a normal delivery, so this option is more desirable than a straight prepayment plan.

Blue Cross Blue Shield’s maternity plan uses the deductible and coinsurance of the plan it is attached to, so it is important to evaluate the varying cost of maternity riders within the context of the deductible and coinsurance of each plan. For example, suppose the maternity rider for a plan was $350 per month. Suppose this plan has a $2,500 deductible with 100% coinsurance. Now the total cost for the pregnancy over the course of a year is $350 times 12 months = $4,200 + the $2,500 deductible = $6,700 for the pregnancy. Now, suppose a second plan had a maternity rider for $450 per month. Suppose this plan has a $1,500 deductible with 100% coinsurance. Now the pregnancy would cost $450 times 12 months = $5,400 + the $1,500 deductible = $6,900. With this hypothetical scenario, the first option is better even though the deductible is higher. The purpose of this example is the illustrate the importance of paying attention to how much it costs to lower your deductible.

With Blue Cross Blue Shield’s maternity plan, it is also important to plan the timing of the pregnancy. The individual deductible reset every January 1st, so it is best to start a maternity policy at the beginning of the year and start trying to get pregnant at that point. Otherwise, the pregnancy will overlap calender years and you may have to meet your deductible more than once.

3. Medicaid maternity coverage. Visit the NC state Medicaid website for current income eligibility requirements.

4. Prepayment plans. I you are already pregnant, a prepayment plan is a last resort. In this case, you should contact the prenatal and delivery caregivers to negotiate a prepay rate. Many hospitals offer discounts for paying out of pocket in advance. When conducting prepayment negotiations it is important to be very specific about what is covered by the arrangement and if the price includes complications of pregnancy, or only normal delivery.…

Working In The Public Sector: Advantages And Disadvantages Of Government Jobs

Is it better to work in the private sector or find employment in the government instead? This is one of the most important questions that new job hunters may ask when looking into their career options. Jobs in the private and public sector both come with their own sets of benefits and drawbacks, and as such, it’s important to carefully consider each factor before settling on a particular profession.

For those who are thinking of working for the government, one of the main benefits that you can enjoy is job security. Unlike jobs in the private sector, government jobs are not as affected by the state of the economy. This means that you will still have a job even during economic recessions, whereas your colleagues in the private sector are more likely to suffer layoffs and lose their jobs.

In addition to having more security, another popular reason for working in the government is the benefits. Of course, those who work in the private sector may also receive benefits, but more often than not, these do not reach the level or scope of those received by civil workers. Attractive government benefits include extended or lifelong health care benefits, paid vacations and maternity leaves, and hefty benefits packages for retirees.

There are also two other lesser-known benefits of working in the public sector: good work hours and solid pay. Contrary to popular belief, government employees actually receive better compensation than their private sector counterparts. Compensation for workers in the public sector is kept at a competitive level to attract high quality professionals. With regard to work hours, on the other hand, government employees usually have to stick only to a regular nine-to-five schedule and there is hardly any need to work extra hours – a really attractive perk for people who wish to spend more time with their families.

Of course, employment in the government does come with a few drawbacks. One of these is less opportunities for promotions. Unlike in the private sector, where you can climb up the corporate ladder and get pay raises at a fast rate, getting higher positions in the public sector usually takes a longer time.

In addition to having fewer chances of getting promoted to a higher position, it may also be difficult to search government jobs and secure them. Available positions in the public sector are very limited and most may require more experience in the field and specialised training (a master’s degree or PhD, for example). Highly specific qualities may also be required for certain government jobs; public offices, for instance, may consider only indigenous members of the Aboriginal community for a healthcare position targeting the group.

Are There Any Grocery Store Foods Comparable to Medifast?

I sometimes have people ask me if there is any way that someone can replicate the medifast diet on their own. I find that many people who ask this question feel that they can save some money by doing this. In my experience, not only is this not the case, but finding healthy foods that are low enough in calories, carbs, and sugars while still high in protein is a very tall order. And, in my opinion, this is going to be needed in order to have the results that you would get on medifast. You’ll need to be able to get in ketosis in the same way that you would on the diet and this combination can be quite difficult (and expensive) to find in the grocery or health food store. To demonstrate this point, in the following article, I’ll show you some comparisons between medifast foods and popular grocery store items.

Finding Something Comparable To Medifast Oatmeal: Probably the breakfast item that I enjoy the most on this diet is the oatmeal. I know that some people ask me if you can find something similar at the market, but, if there is an alternative, I haven’t found it. The diet oatmeal has only 100 calories, 15 grams of carbs, one gram of sugar, and 11 grams of protein. In contrast, Quaker brand has (depending on the flavor) 120 calories, 27 carbohydrates and a high 12 grams of sugar. There is only 3 grams of protein. If you look, you’ll likely see that it’s very difficult to find a similar oatmeal with the same ratios.

Is There Anything Similar To The Medifast Brownie?: If there is, I haven’t found it either. The diet brownie can be served warm and is pretty decadent tasting, yet it only had 110 calories, 15 grams of carbs, 8 of sugar, and 11 of protein. Granted, this product is a bit higher in sugar, but this is factored into the diet and I can’t imagine finding another brownie product that is this high in protein while being lower in sugar. I’m very impressed that you’re able to eat a brownie while on this diet. Not only that, but there’s no restriction on this meal. You can enjoy it quite often if you like it.

Are There Any Compatible Medifast Shakes?: This is the question that I’m most often asked. And I’ve looked at several, which have come up short of my criteria. The 55 shakes that are in the women’s basic package have only 90 calories, 15 carbs, 8 sugars, and 11 proteins. Compare this with special K shakes which have not only 180 calories, but also about ten grams more of sugar, and about 16 more of carbs. Some of the slim fast shakes contain a whopping excess of 200 calories, 20 grams of fat, and 40 grams of carbs.

Grocery Store Bars As Opposed To The Medifast Bars: This diet does have a maintenance bar that is limited to only one per day because the calories, carbs, and sugars are a bit higher. But the crunch bars, which are also quite good, are not limited in this way. Like the other foods, they barely break the 100 calorie mark and only have 12 carbs, two sugars, and 11 grams of protein. Compare that with a bar like Kashi’s or special K which has between 11 – 13 grams of sugar.

People will often ask me things like “does 10 additional grams of sugar or carbohydrates really make that much of a difference?” In terms of ketosis, it really can. Every gram counts here and it’s very important to get the right ratio of these things with a high enough amount of protein if you’re trying to get into fat burning mode. And, as you can have these differences in each of the six meals, over the course of the day, you really can see a very big difference in what you are taking in.

Do You Really Save Any Money At The Grocery Store?: As I said, many people are looking for an alternative because they are trying to save money. In my experience, most anything that is remotely comparable is going to be a very specialized product that is going to be much more expensive than typical groceries. Since with coupon codes you can often get the cost of medifast meals down to just a little over $2, you might not save as much as you think, if anything at all depending on where you live. Not only that, you might still be walking away with more calories, carbohydrates, and sugars (and less proteins) than you would if you went with the diet.

Marvelous Medicinal Value of Effective Herbal Supplement

Taking bee pollen supplements regularly can also help strengthen your immune system, protecting your body against various diseases. Ginseng, a potent herb included in the list of traditional oriental medicines can greatly help fight physical and emotional stress, enhance memory and improve mental alertness.

The Benefits of Changing Your Eating Habits

We’ve all heard it before – if we want to grow to be healthy and strong, we need to eat healthy foods. But eating healthy foods not only helps us to grow healthy, it also helps our bodies fight off certain diseases. The food that you eat can significantly affect every aspect of your health, so changing our daily eating habits is necessary. This article will discuss how a healthy eating pattern can benefit you, as well as how you can go about changing your eating habits.

Most people who consider dieting do so because they are overweight. Research has shown that obesity can significantly increase an individual’s risk of a wide variety of illnesses and diseases, so keeping our weight under control is of extreme importance. Not only does losing weight benefit our bodies, it also benefits our minds. Weight loss often helps individuals feel better about their bodies, increasing their self confidence and happiness with themselves.

Nursing Is a Service To Humanity

From the earliest days of human existence, medicine has been central in man’s struggle for existence and survival in the face of a myriad of diseases and other ailments that daily confront him. In its various forms of practice, medicine has been a highly regarded profession and people looked upon medicine practitioners as the most important people in the society. This concept of and societal attitude to medicine and its practitioners have survived till today, with medical practitioners being regarded as next to God in the matter of the preservation and sustenance of life and health.

Over the years, the medicine industry has metamorphosed into a giant network of ancillary personnel who facilitate the work of medicine practitioners in a variety of ways. Among this variety personnel are nurses who constitute the major and most important component of the health industry, with roles and functions which no other health care professionals have. Although the point has not frequently been made or generally canvassed, the role of the nursing profession in the success and effectiveness of the medical profession is not only fundamental but in fact indispensable. And that is to say that the credit and tribute in the success of the medicine profession must be shared between medicine practitioners and nurses first and foremost.

The primacy of the role of nurses in the medical profession is clearly evident in the area of patients’ care which forms the central function and focus of medical practice. While the major function of the medical practitioner or doctor is that of disease diagnosis and drug prescription in addition to routine visits and observation, the nurses perform very many other vital functions that are critical to the survival and recovery of the patient touching on the emotional, physical, mental and psychological state and stability of the patients. Nurses not only play the role of patients’ families and relations by providing necessary minute to minute care, assistance and general support to patients, in the case of children patients, nurses frequently play the role of mothers with all its emotional and psychological requirements by children. The same applies to the care of elderly patients, disabled patients, mental patients and other specialized patients over which the nurse acts as immediate and ever present support and care.

Nurses also play crucial role in post recovery rehabilitation of patients. Besides their vital role in patient care, nurses play a similar important role in primary and preventive health care in the form of public health promotion – educating the public on the prevention of diseases, accidents and general health knowledge. Experienced and well trained nurses also play remarkable role in medical research and diagnosis based on long years of experience in patient care. Hence in many cases, nurses draw the attention of doctors to observed symptoms in patients which are frequently accurate or also provide effective lead for more accurate diagnosis by doctors. By virtue of their observation skills and round-the-clock presence around patients, nurses provide ongoing assessment of patient’s health which when shared with doctors lead to more effective or efficacious treatments.

Not infrequently, nurses have saved lives through keen and vigilant watch over patients and reporting signs or symptoms of some critical developments to doctors such as respiratory failure, cardiac arrest and other critical patient conditions. In many cases, experienced nurses are known to have effectively and successfully saved the lives of patients at such critical moments when a physician is not forthcoming or absent by effectively performing necessary intervention tasks that should otherwise be performed by a doctor. Perhaps among the most important and admirable role of nurses is the emotional and psychological role they offer the patients at the hour of death which is the most critical moment of a person’s life. Again, this they do by virtue of their round-the-clock proximity and companionship with patients and in most cases, nurses are the nearest and often only human companion to offer last minute succor to the patient at this harrowing moment.

The same is true in moments of crisis in patient’s illness, particularly in the case of critical illnesses such as asthma, sickle cell, cancer, and other illnesses associated with sudden painful attacks. During these hurtful moments, it is the nurses, much more than doctors that provides immediate medical, physical, emotional and other forms of needed patient support and care. In terms of work schedule, nurses are frequently overworked due to the imponderable and often indefinable nature of their duties. Apart from the high number of patients a nurse has to oversee and care for, the nurse performs several other tasks including collection, labeling and sending of laboratory samples including urine and blood samples to and from the laboratory. In consideration of the foregoing, it is not surprising that nurses have been rated as equal, if not …

Ayurvedic Defense Against the MRSA Superbug

Just the other day, a 17 year old boy was brought into my office. He had a swollen jaw. I examined it and recommend the father take the boy to their family MD for antibiotics.

Well, the next day the father came back. The boy was diagnosed with MRSA (aka the antibiotic-resistant Superbug). The father wanted to know what Ayurvedic treatments I could offer.

As you know MRSA (pronounced Mursa in the States) has evolved, mutated and adapted its DNA to be super-resistant to conventional treatments. It can survive a full dose of beta-lactam antibiotics, including penicillin, methicillin, and cephalosporins, according to Medical Microbiology.

How MRSA Probably Came About…

The virus was discovered in 1961 in the UK, two years after we started using the antibiotic methicillin to treat S. aureus and other infectious bacteria. That’s how it got its name, Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus).

Since then this superbug has been on a rampage. MRSA infections in the United States reached 127,000 in 1999 (according to a 2007 report in Emerging Infectious Diseases, a publication of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention). And that’s only counting the infections that were treated in hospitals. Of those 127,000 infections, 11,000 people died.

These Figures Suggest That MRSA Is Causing More Deaths than AIDS

By 2005, MRSA was associated with 18,650 hospital stay-related deaths, estimates the October 17, 2007 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Almost all these deaths were from people with weakened immune systems.

MRSA was once only labeled as a hospital acquired (HA-MRSA) infection. Now, however, it’s turning up in schools, gyms and day care centers. It has been promoted to the rank of community acquired (CA-MRSA) infection.

A 17 Year Old High School Student’s Battle With MRSA

Last October, a 17 year old boy named Ashton Bonds from Virginia’s Staunton River high school acquired a MRSA staph infection according to CNN. Ashton went to the Bedford Memorial Hospital on October 4th with a pain in his side. After they ruled out appendicitis they sent him home.

Three days later, he was readmitted. By that time the MRSA infection had spread to his kidneys, liver, lungs and the muscles around his heart.

Antibiotic treatment was useless. The doctors sedated him and put him on ventilator. They were ready to begin surgery to try to drain the infection from his lungs. Very sadly, a blood clot near his heart got to him first.

21 schools in his area were immediately closed down and given a thorough cleaning to prevent the spread of the disease.

Superbugs are Super-Intelligent

As much as antibiotics has saved millions of people since their discovery, stories like this one show that they’re losing its power. You must understand how intelligent bacteria can be. They actually scavenge the dead remains of other bacteria that perished to antibiotic. They can see what killed their brothers and mutate accordingly. Okay, back to that boy and his father who came to my clinic with the swollen jaw. As you can see, it’s no surprise they didn’t want to rely on conventional medical treatment.

Fortunately, there’s still a wealth of remedies available for dealing with MRSA and other skin infections. Of course, they are natural treatments that can’t be patented and sold as a drug. If they can’t be sold as a drug, who can afford to pay the millions of dollars required to get it FDA approved?

Thank Goodness for the Natural Rainforests of the Amazon and India

In these regions traditional people have kept the production of herbal medicines flowing to us in the West. The marriage of organically grown plant medicines with the ancient techniques of formulation have provided us with a rich system for keeping human beings healthy.

These superbugs are Mother Earth telling us to keep ourselves healthy with what she provides for us. Why rely on processed antibiotics? Annihilation as the main means to rid the body of toxic bacteria does not work. This has been scientifically proven by the breakout of MRSA in hospitals throughout the US.

For the Boy With The Swollen Jaw I Prescribed…

Turmeric – 2 capsules with lunch and dinner. (According to a report by the University of Maryland Medical Center turmeric’s volatile oil serves as a natural antibiotic. It’s been used to treat all sorts of skin and respiratory infections for thousands of years.)

Guduchi – 1-2 capsules at night before sleeping. (Lab studies showed that guduchi reduced or eliminated E. coli and upper respiratory infection, according to the Indian Journal of Pharmacology 2003.)

Triphala – 1-2 capsules at night before sleeping. (A 2006 study by the University of Madras showed triphala inhibited growth of common bacterial isolates from HIV patients.)

Superbugs Versus Supermen

We talk so much about superbugs as if they are more dangerous to …

What to Do About Stretch Marks on Penis Skin

When someone hears the term “stretch marks,” they usually think of pregnant women and their round, full bellies. But marks can happen anywhere on the body. Despite the best penis care and attention possible, men might sometimes wind up with marks in the groin area, on the scrotum and yes, even on the penis skin.

The good news is that marks aren’t a sign of any underlying medical condition. Sometimes they just happen. There is other good news as well; it is possible to reduce the appearance of stretch marks on penis skin. Here’s what a man needs to know.

Why did the stretch marks appear?

Stretch marks are hallmarks of changing body size. Women often wind up with after pregnancy, as their skin has stretched to its limits while growing a baby. Some people wind up with marks after puberty, when they go through a growth spurt that puts inches and weight on their frame. And still others get stretch marks when they gain a few too many pounds.

So how does a man wind up with stretch on the penis skin? When the skin stretches to accommodate an erection, it might be enough to cause those tiny, painless tears in the dermis. Over time, those tears turn into the long, silvery trails of marks.

But that doesn’t explain stretch marks on the scrotum. In most cases, in areas that aren’t normally stretched happen with very slight tears. For instance, a man who sits down in the wrong way and feels a slight tug on the testicles might immediately stand back up, shift things around, and sit back down. This happens so often that he might not even really register that he’s doing it. But sure enough, even that bit of discomfort from stretching can be enough to create a tiny stretch mark.

What to do about stretch marks

Men will be quite relieved to know that stretch marks don’t mean anything in terms of other medical problems. They are so natural and happen to so many people that several studies, as well as anecdotal evidence, point to marks simply being an annoying part of everyday life.

But for a man, stretch marks on the penis can mean much more than annoyance. A guy’s self-esteem might take a huge hit if he looks down to see unsightly on his equipment. That can lead to social embarrassment, a hesitation to show his penis to potential partners, and even problems with performing.

For men whose intimate life is negatively affected by stretch marks, there are a few options. A good dermatologist might offer certain therapies, such as laser therapy or microdermabrasion, that can lessen the appearance of marks. In order to get the best results from any sort of treatment, a man should seek out help during the first six weeks or so, when the marks are still reddish or purple in color. During this time, the skin is much more likely to heal.

One of the best ways a man can help reduce the appearance of stretch marks is through crèmes that are appropriate for the situation. One of those should be a top-notch penis health crème (health professionals recommend Man 1 Man Oil, which is clinically proven mild and safe for skin). A man wants plenty of hydration to help ensure his penis skin stays as smooth and supple as possible, which allows it more room to stretch during erections. A crème that contains not only Shea butter, but vitamin E as well, can help a man keep the penis skin as healthy as possible. Other nutrients, including retinol and alpha lipoic acid to help fight the signs of aging, can help keep the penis skin handsome.

The Health Benefits of the Virgin Bloody Mary Drink

Cocktails are a lot of fun no matter what the environment. There are some people who simply do not want to drink cocktails because they do not enjoy the negative health effects which they face by drinking too much alcohol. This causes people to avoid cocktails altogether, but there are many cocktails which can be made in a non alcoholic version which will have great health benefits for you. One of the best recipes you can have without alcohol is the virgin Bloody Mary drink. So, put away the punch and the wine. Put the beer back in the fridge and get ready to try a recipe for a healthier cocktail everyone can enjoy.

Why the Bloody Mary is Healthy

The main ingredient in a Bloody Mary is the main reason why the drink is so healthy to begin with. The tomato juice which is used for the cocktail includes many different vitamins in a concentrated dosage. One of the most abundant vitamins is Lycopene. This is a water soluble vitamin which is very good for your heart. It helps in removing clogs which are caused by plaque in your arteries as well as other heart maladies.

You will also find a lot of vitamin C in tomato juice. Many people are unaware of how much vitamin C you can get from a tomato. Since Tomato juice contains all of the water from the tomato, you are getting every ounce of vitamin C the tomato has to offer. What better way to enjoy it than with the spicy concoction that is the Bloody Mary drink. You will even find you will consume less sugar and sodium than you will if you were to drink a soft drink of the same volume.

How to Increase the Health Benefits

While the standard Bloody Mary is already pretty healthy, you will enjoy even more benefits when you pair it with a stalk of celery or even add celery puree to your mixture. Adding garlic and onions is another great heart healthy way to drink yourself into a healthier future. Even the addition of the spice is a great way to increase metabolism and awaken the senses. You can find this in horseradish or in hot sauce. Both of these are common ingredients. Use fresh lime juice in the cocktail and the health benefits will go through the roof.

Some may try to tell about how wines have been proven to help reduce fat and increase heart functions. While there might be some truth to this, drinking any alcohol is simply not for everyone. This does not mean you have to miss out on all of the health benefits which are available to you through a properly prepared beverage. You can enjoy a Bloody Mary drink and your body will thank you for it. The best part is, this is a cocktail you can share with the entire family even if they like to drink alcohol. No one will miss the vodka if you have a good recipe to share.

Law Of Attraction: Manifesting Better Health

Every time everyone talks about the law of attraction, money is always the first thing that comes to mind. Of course, that’s the ultimate goal for everyone including myself… to attain financial freedom. Many equate financial freedom to happiness which may be true according to their respective interpretation. However, when you truly understand the interaction between money and this universal law, you will realize that this focus can lead to changes that may not necessarily equate to happiness. Poor thinking and poor practices can lead to manifestations that backfire!

In order for the law of attraction to work for you, it is good to remember a crucial key which is an appreciation for your present state of abundance. A thankfulness for all the blessings that are already in your life which interprets into the realization that there is actually nothing lacking at all but instead a welcome state for more abundance. With an attitude for gratitude, you are aligning your positive feeling into harmony with the Universe.

In gratitude, you realize that money is important, but not more important than your health. A continuing state of health in the pink is a state of freedom that is immeasurable to anything else you would want look forward to experience in your life.

Now you may begin to question, “Is it possible to manifest the level of health that you want using the law of attraction?”

The principles of the law of attraction are applicable to anything you want to bring forth into your life and it does make sense in leading you down the path of good health. You can use it just the way you would apply to manifesting financial freedom by removing the fears and expectation of illnesses that surround you. You know that the Universe sends back to you whatever you send out in your focused thoughts that are strengthened by your emotions.

Good health is a natural state of your body. Believing this becomes your reality but when you allow your body to be overcome with stress, fatigue and over-indulgence, your vitality becomes your own victim. Drained of all energy, your thoughts are weakened into feeling unwell, depleted and beaten. During these challenged state, your thoughts and emotions are easily hijacked to trigger the negative physiological responses in your body. Believing them to be irreversible or incurable will soon become your reality too!

Change your belief system to return your mindset and emotions that attracts good health. Be grateful for every little improvement you noticed in your everyday health as you regain the power to repel the negative thoughts. Your belief system is a powerful tool that can help you to regain your health and vitality. There are no guarantees that you will never fall sick or suffer from an illness but it is important to believe that you deserve good health and complementing with the necessary measures to maintain a positive balance can make it happen.

Being conscious of your own ability to manifest a better health, you can create deliberate acts to ensure your body generates the positive physiological responses by starting on the following steps;

1. Identify the state of good health you want: Understanding the law of attraction, you know you will need to determine what good health is in your mind. If you are intent on losing weight as part of regaining your health, define how much weight you want to lose and the time frame. If you are looking to repair your general health, define the goal you are looking for. Even if you seek the prevention of a hereditary condition, define what you are looking for.

2. Focus on your desired state of good health: Always remember to focus on your end result… the state of where you want to be and not where you are or how you are getting from now to then. Free yourself from being methodical and trust the Universe to guide you.

3. Take inspired action to achieve good health: This is the most common statement that involves the process of self-improvement. Well, your desire to maintain or attain good health is very much a part of self-improvement. For the law of attraction to work for you, this is a necessary part of the process. Allowing the Universe to take its course, the solutions will be lined up for you and it is up to you to take the actions you are inspired to do. It could be a new exercise regime, a new eating habit, quit smoking, follow a prescribed list of medication or undergo a certain corrective surgery.

The power to turn your health around is in your hands. You decide what you want, focus, take the necessary actions and let the Universe show you the way to a healthy …

Products And – Or Services – Defining "Service-Oriented" Products and the Related Role of Technology

The economy can be analyzed using both market-driven and production-driven approaches to industry classification. The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) uses a market-driven approach; the older Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) uses a production-driven approach.

Under a market-driven approach, the economy comprises goods-producing and service-providing industries. Goods-producing industries include: natural resources and mining, construction, and manufacturing; service-providing industries include: wholesale and retail trade, transportation (and warehousing), utilities, information, financial activities, professional and business services, education and health services, leisure and hospitality, and public administration.

Under a production-driven approach, the economy comprises product-driven and service-driven industries. Product-driven industries comprise enterprises that manage inventories available for sale as primary activities (regardless of whether they transform them or not). Under this approach, the retail, wholesale, and food service industries are product-driven. (The kitchens of food service providers are equivalent to factories.) Product-driven enterprises may have extensive cost accounting and operations practices for inventory management.

Industry classifications can be applied to an enterprise as a whole (the primary industry), and to the establishments within it, which may be in differing secondary industries. Establishments are facilities that include plants (factories and warehouses) and branches (retail and wholesale outlets).

For example, the hospitality industry is service-driven; under the production-driven approach, the bar and restaurant establishments within a hotel are product-driven. The entertainment industry is service-driven; under the production-driven approach, the retail and bar establishments within a theater are product-driven. The health care industry is service-driven; under the production-driven approach, the retail pharmacy establishment within a hospital is product-driven. Under the market-driven approach, all of these establishments are service-providing.

For example, a manufacturing enterprise is goods-producing under a market-driven approach, and product-driven under a production-driven approach. If it also operates a retail delivery system, the stores are service-providers under a market-driven approach, and are product-driven under a production-driven approach. If all sales revenue is sourced from its own products, the enterprise is in two primary industries. However, if forced to decide, its selection should be based upon core competencies – activities that it performs well. The enterprise can be divided into two separate business units: manufacturing and merchandising. The merchandising unit is an internal customer of the manufacturing unit. However, depending on strategy and policy, the manufacturing unit could sell products to wholesalers and other retailers, and the merchandising unit could buy products from other manufacturers and wholesalers. Under a market-driven approach, the manufacturing unit is goods-producing and the merchandising unit is service-providing, whereas under the production-driven approach, the merchandising unit is product-driven.

The make-up of the economy changes overtime as newer industries emerge and grow and older industries mature and decline. For example, the manufacturing industry is shifting from vertically integrated to strategically outsourced. Strategic outsourcers may manufacture specialized components and assemble finished products. However, by outsourcing the manufacturing of utility components to specialty scale manufacturers, strategic outsourcers can lower their production costs.

Biotechnology and nanotechnology are emerging industries. The information industries are growing as technology becomes more ubiquitous, and as knowledge is packaged in digital products. Knowledge is information that has been learned and retained. In the future, knowledge will be retained extensively in electronic form.

Products and services…

The term “product” is associated with something that is tangible – the resulting inventory from agricultural, mining and drilling, construction, and manufacturing activities. Outputs are either end-products, or components that are assembled into end-products in downstream processes within the enterprise or in its customers.

The term “service” is associated with something that is intangible – capabilities either delivered at the point or time of sale, or shortly thereafter, or as a supporting service. Supporting services can be purchased at the time of sale for downstream use, or later, and consist of such items as warranties beyond those bundled with the product, preventive maintenance, and routine cleaning and repairs.

Functions and features of products are easier to discern than those of services, which are event or activity driven, and may occur in the future.

The term “time of sale” means when a contractual or non-contractual agreement between a buyer and a seller is made, and does not necessarily mean when revenue is recognized and earned. Revenue is recognized and earned according to the accounting principles that fit the service offering, which may be over a period of time.

A commodity is a product or service that is indistinguishable and interchangeable with another of the same type because there is little to no value added. Many commodities are natural, such as produce, minerals, oil, and gas. Services can be commoditized too. The distinguishing factors of a commodity provider include convenience, quality of service, and price.

Product-driven enterprises also offer delivery and supporting services. Delivery services include arranging for transportation, dealer preparation, training, and gift wrapping. Supporting services include cleaning, repairs, and maintenance. To remain competitive over time, enterprises …

Medications That May Affect Penis Health

According to a recent study in California, USA the more prescription drugs imbibed into the body, the greater the risk of penis health problems such as impotence and erectile dysfunction. It is well known that certain medications can cause problems with erectile health (antidepressants, blood pressure medications, etc.) but also taking multiple drugs simultaneously can cause the chemicals to interact negatively with one another giving the patient additional health problems. US healthcare practitioners continue to advise patients to move towards beneficial lifestyle changes including the regular intake of vitamins and minerals, whilst taking daily exercise, and healthy eating, and to reduce medications wherever possible.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are prescribed for many ailments: wounds, coughs, sinusitis, surgery, etc. Antibiotic ingredients such as erythromycin, tetracycline, nitrofurantoin and gentamycin have shown to affect male health negatively. Erythromycin interacts with the drug sildenafil, and gentamycin is toxic to the testes. In a study published in Experimental and Toxicological Pathology researchers found that tetracycline was toxic to both the testes and to sperm cells in both animals and humans. Tetracycline impaired testicular health, reduced testosterone levels, reduced fertility, and increased free radical damage. The harmful effects of the antibiotic were significantly reduced by supplementing with L-cysteine and vitamin C.

Heart Medications

Heart disease is the leading cause of death in adult men in the Western world. For many men, taking prescription medications to control blood pressure is a necessity, even if the negative impact on male sexual performance is understood; in many cases men simply feel they have no option.

Many types of blood pressure medications, including alpha-blockers, beta-blockers, and diuretics, reduce zinc and testosterone levels, damage libido, and adversely affect nerve functioning. These problems occur because the drugs reduce circulation to the peripheral areas, including the male reproductive system and the penis. In addition, beta-blockers may negatively affect the nervous system by sedating the user. While these medications may keep men alive for longer, they may also impact negatively on the quality of life. When erectile problems, low-libido or other symptoms arise, it is important to talk with the doctor about what other options might be available.

Prostate drugs

Half of men over the age of 50 experience some degree of benign prostate problems, including frequent urination at night, training to urinate and feeling that the bladder is not empty after urination. The most common drugs to battle these symptoms are the medications finasteride and dutasteride, 5-alpha-reductase inhibitors, designed to control androgen production which leads to non-cancerous growth of the prostate gland. 5-alpha-reductase inhibits are also commonly used for other problems, such as male baldness (alopecia).

A study from the Boston University School of Medicine, USA now confirms that these commonly used drugs do indeed impair male sexual health. Finasteride and dutasteride were found to be associated with symptoms of low-libido and depression in young as well as older men. Natural botanical extracts, such as saw palmetto, which are often purchased over-the-counter for prostate problems, may also contribute to low-libido, as they work on the 5-alpha-reductase enzymes similar to prostate medications.

Anti-depressants

According to Shubulade Smith, Senior Lecturer at Maudsley Hospital and Institute of Psychiatry, UK drugs that affect the nervous system are often notorious for causing erectile and libido problems in both men and women. Tricyclic antidepressants cause erectile dysfunction, MOAI’s cause erectile dysfunction and delayed ejaculation, and SSRI’s cause erectile dysfunction, low-libido, ejaculatory problems, and loss of orgasm while anti-epileptic, anti-psychotic and sleeping medication may also cause some sexual problems. Dr. Smith recommends talking to a doctor about what can be done to help the situation.

In a study funded by the University of California, USA researchers found extracts of the herb Ginkgo biloba significantly reduced the side effects of antidepressant medication (SSRI’s, MAOI’s, SNRI’s and tricyclics) on sexual function, improving erections, libido, excitement and orgasms.

Penis Health Crèmes

Health crèmes are nutrient-rich products that may help to protect the penis and the male reproductive system from damage from prescription medications. Clearly it is not practical for men to simply stop taking prescription medications, but in many cases the negative impact upon the male organ can be reduced.

Specialist formulas (most professionals recommend Man1Man Oil) include vitamin C for male hormone production, vitamin E for circulation and tissue health, L-carnitine for healthy fertility and libido, and alpha lipoic acid for nerve sensitivity. Penis health crèmes should not be contraindicated with any drugs or medications, as they are natural products rich in vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
