Further, there are approximately eight thousand medicinal plant varieties utilised by over two million traditional healers for treating ailments of both humans and livestock. Jawhar block in Palghar district, Maharashtra is a tribal block having rich biodiversity, especially rice varieties having specific characteristics and uses. The tribal farmers have cultivated diverse rice varieties for purposes such as food security, instant energy provision during peak workload and medicinal use. This wonderful diversity of rice has formed the basis of a nutritious and secure diet for the vulnerable groups of the tribal population, that is, mothers, pregnant and lactating women and young children.

Various ongoing studies conducted by the NGOs such as BAIF Development Research Foundation in different tribal belts across Maharashtra found a number of rice varieties having specific medicinal properties and uses. For instance, one rice variety called ‘Mahadi’ has multiple health benefits; one of them is to cure weakness in women post pregnancy. Other rice varieties include Rajghudya and Kali Kudai (used to increase breast milk in lactating women); Kali Khadsi (for child’s growth and nutrition); Kasbai (used for nebulisation, which gives instant relief from cough) and Dangi (used for instant energy boost), among others.

Furthermore, traditional kitchens, serve as an in-house medical supply store. Tribal regions lack proper healthcare centres. Thus, most of the child deliveries take place at home and not in a hospital. The rate of institutional deliveries is slowly increasing but there is still a long way to go for this to become a rule, rather than an exception. Since most of deliveries take place at home, the traditional birth attendants play a major role in tribal regions. One of the practices performed by the birth attendants in villages is to use materials like cow dung as a disinfectant in the house that helps keep various diseases at bay. The various homemade medications, mostly herbal, for the mother and child are also prescribed predominantly. Restoring the mother to her original physiology is a challenge that the native healers often take up.

Habitat Loss – A Threat to Traditional Medicine

An impending threat to further proliferation of traditional medicine is the rampant loss of habitat. Unregulated harvesting of wild produce coupled with ecological degradation leading to extensive resource depletion and tribal landlessness (and even those who do have land are continuously losing their land to the government or private corporations) are some of the factors posing a grave and growing threat to the conservation of indigenous foods and traditional medicinal plants.

Furthermore, there has been a gradual erosion of indigenous varieties, especially rice biodiversity. Most of the indigenous rice varieties are being replaced by high yielding varieties. These high yielding varieties have not resulted in any spectacular increase in yield in this region. The majority of farmers, especially the resource-poor tribal farmers are not able to afford high quality expensive fertilizers which are normally recommended along with these varieties.

Community Needs Health Assessment

In 2012 the Internal Revenue Service mandated that all non-profit hospitals undertake a community health needs assessment (CHNA) that year and every three years thereafter. Further, these hospitals need to file a report every year thereafter detailing the progress that the community is making towards meeting the indicated needs. This type of assessment is a prime example of primary prevention strategy in population health management. Primary prevention strategies focus on preventing the occurrence of diseases or strengthen the resistance to diseases by focusing on environmental factors generally.

I believe that it is very fortunately that non-profit hospitals are carrying out this activity in their communities. By assessing the needs of the community and by working with community groups to improve the health of the community great strides can be made in improving public health, a key determinant of one's overall health. As stated on the Institute for Healthcare Improvement's Blue Shirt Blog ( CHNAs and Beyond: Hospitals and Community Health Improvement) , "There is growing recognition that the social determinants of health – where we live, work, and play, the food we eat, the opportunities we have to work and exercise and live in safety – drive health outcomes. Of course, there is a large role for health care to play in delivering health care services, but it is indisputable that the foundation of a healthy life lies within the community "To manage true population health – that is, the health of a community – hospitals and health systems must partner with a broad spectrum of stakeholders who share ownership for improving health in our communities." I believe that these types of community involvement will become increasingly important as reimbursements is driven by value.

Historically, healthcare providers have managed the health of individuals and local health departments have managed the community environment to promote healthy lives. Now, with the IRS requirement, the work of the two are beginning to overlap. Added to the recent connection of the two are local coalitions and community organizations, such as religious organizations.

The community in which I live provides an excellent example of the new interconnections of various organizations to collectively improve the health of the community. In 2014 nine non-profits, including three hospitals, in Kent County, Michigan conducted a CHNA of the county to assess the strengths and weaknesses of health in the county and to assess the community's perceptions of the pressing health needs. The assessment concluded that the key areas of focus for improving the health of the community are:

· Mental health issues

· Poor nutrition and obesity

· Substance abuse

· Violence and safety

At this time the Kent County Health Department has begun developing a strategic plan for the community to address these issues. A wide variety of community groups have begun meeting monthly to form this strategic plan. There are four work groups, one for each of the key areas of focus. I am involved in the Substance Abuse workgroup as a representative of one of my clients, Kent Intermediate School District. Other members include a substance abuse prevention lawsuit, a Federally qualified health center, a substance abuse treatment center and the local YMCA, among others. The local hospitals are involved in other workgroups. One of the treatment group representatives is a co-chair of our group. The health department wants to be sure that the strategic plan is community driven.

At the first meeting the health department leadership stated that the strategic plan must be community driven. This is so in order that the various agencies in the community will buy into the strategic plan and will work cooperatively to provide the most effective prevention and treatment services without overlap. The dollars spent on services will be more effective if the various agencies work to enhance each others' work, to the extent possible.

At this time the Substance Abuse work group is examining relevant data from the 2014 CHNA survey and from other local resources. The epidemiologist at the health department is reviewing relevant data with the group so that any decisions about the goals of the strategic plan will be data driven. Using data to make decisions is one of the keys of the group's operating principles. All objectives in the strategic plan will be specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound (SMART).

Once the strategic plan is finished, the groups will continue with implementation of the plan, evaluating the results of the implementation and adjusting the plan as needed in light of evaluation. As one can see, the workgroups of the CHNA are following the classic Plan-Do-Check-Act process. This process has been shown time and again in many settings-healthcare, business, manufacturing, et al-to produce excellent outcomes when properly followed.

Officially, if there is an Organic label on the product, it is organic. BUT, if it is a sealed, processed product (notice i do not call it food …), it is only 95% organic. Does it matter? "what can 5% do to me? I've been eating" regular "food all of my life, why should i suddenly go from regular veggies to organic vegetables nutrition based diet ???"

The answer is yes. Organic IS better for us. In fact, it is the only food for us. As i have written in a prior article, the whole definition of "food" has lost it's original roots that were once planted deep in mother natures heart of soil, and have been re-rotted in a laboratory to achieve best monetary value for the owners of the land.

The real question in hand is our health, happiness and stamina. The basic most important thing we absolutely must remember is that in this day and age organic first of all means AVOIDING. It's avoiding chemicals we were never originally introduced with except through our stomachs. It is avoiding genetically engineered substances life never intended to create that have already proven to cause many diseases, Cancer being the most famous of them all. It's avoiding hazardous substances that are used to keep insects away. It's avoiding risk.

We read these definitions every where on any product, yet how do the people that have written it know? the simple fact is they do not.

In order for a logo to have any magnesium in it, the soil it grows in must be rich enough in it to serve on the tomato. Does it matter? “what can 5% do to me? I’ve been eating “regular” food all of my life, why should i suddenly go from regular veggies to organic vegetables nutrition based diet???”

The answer is yes. Organic IS better for us. In fact, it is the only food for us. As i have written in a prior article, the whole definition of “food” has lost it’s original roots that were once planted deep in mother natures heart of soil, and have been re-rotted in a laboratory to achieve best monetary value for the owners of the land.

The real question in hand is our health, happiness and stamina. The basic most important thing we absolutely must remember is that in this day and age organic first of all means AVOIDING. It’s avoiding chemicals we were never formally introduced with except through our stomachs. It is avoiding genetically engineered materials life never intended to create that have already proven to cause many diseases, Cancer being the most famous of them all. It’s avoiding hazardous materials that are used to keep insects away. It’s avoiding risk.

Health is natural. It is the way we are made. We are born with a system that knows how to handle a super wide variety of material. We haven’t began understanding the vastness of this body of ours. Our body is capable of handling more materials at the same time and with minimum energy consumption then all world laboratories put in together. Put in petrol in a car that runs on diesel, and you get trouble. Put in un-natural material in our body, and i think you can guess where I am going with this.

As we have already understood, organic, being more about the NOT then anything else, we can look a bit deeper into the subject, again, not going to far as it is a never ending road. Amongst the many factors that effect the quality of our fruits and vegetables is the soil it grows on. When we read about the nutritional facts of a Tomato, for example, we might learn that a “serving” of a tomato has 15Mg of magnesium in it. We read these definitions every where on any product, yet how do the people that have written it know? the simple fact is they don’t.

there are averages and out-of-date calculations, and many testing regulations, but the matter of fact is that we simple cannot ever know without specifically checking each and every piece of fruit or vegetable in front of us. In order for a tomato to have any magnesium in it, the soil it grew in must be rich enough in it to serve on the tomato. Not enough Magnesium in the soil, not enough magnesium in the tomato. as simple as that (well, a bit more complex than that actually, as there are more factors that help the vegetable to take in the magnesium…).
