The True Definition of Conditioning in Sports and Fitness

Conditioning is a word that is used a lot in the fitness industry but what does it really mean to have conditioning? There are those that are ripped from strength conditioning, marathon runners have to go through a type of stamina conditioning and then there is the conditioning that is necessary for fighters and martial artists.

Conditioning can come off as this hard core concept of hard work and training to build your body up so it can perform or endure what the sport demands of it.

And it’s true.

However, that is not the whole picture of what it means to be a conditioned athlete. Building your body and it’s performance potentials is only the outcome associated to having “great conditioning”.

The other half of the definition of conditioning is more about the discipline, the standard and the values that you adopt.

“Great conditioning” is the result of adopting and integrating habits, standards and values that slowly, over time changes and transforms the conditions of the body.

Conditioning isn’t so much about building yourself up but rather more about adopting a specific way of being that will serve you in the long run which is beneficial for the performance and execution of the skills in a given sport or physical activity.

So, how do you integrate a great conditioning ritual? One that will meet your athletic needs based on the sport or physical activity of your choice?

A good place to start is by looking at where your values are placed in your sport. By looking at the components that you already have a natural inclination to favour and value, then you have a platform where you can design for yourself a discipline that you are more than likely to commit to.

If for example you naturally favour cardio, then use that as a base to develop a discipline to condition, not only great cardio but also as a way to condition better form, more strength and greater endurance doing the activity that is the source of cardio. It’s also a great way to develop secondary attributes. If, for instance you typically rely on jogging for cardio but you would like to develop another physical skill or work on some upper body, than you might consider cardio boxing. Or you might want to develop better foot co-ordination and do some skip rope.

By focusing on what you already prefer, you are much more likely to build on it and develop a discipline and from a place of discipline is where conditioning can flow from the best.

Also, using discipline is a powerful way to predispose yourself to growth and improvement in a specific skill or attribute. Once you have established a discipline on a particular practice, then it’s only a matter of pushing yourself and upping the ante in order to improve and refine that conditioning.

Let me leave with one final thought, and that is, when thinking in terms of the type of conditioning you feel you may need for whatever fitness goal that you have, think about what habits you need to adopt and how you need to be in the process of the training rather than what you need to do to reach and achieve a goal to finally arrive at. Chances are that when you arrive at that goal, in order to maintain it, you will need to sustain the conditioning by maintaining the practice that got you there in the first place.

Conditioning is a process.

The B Vitamin Family Explained

Introduction

Vitamin B is a water soluble organic compound which is an essential nutrient needed by the body for everyday living, and the hundreds of processes your body carries out to enable it to function, Like all vitamins it cannot be manufactured by the body and must be derived from dietary sources or from supplementation in the case of known deficiencies. Because Vitamin B is water soluble a lot of it is secreted in the urine on a daily basis making the daily intake either through food sources in the diet or by taking supplements important for all the functions it is required for to enable the body to function.

There are now 8 main B Vitamins within the group, originally it was thought there was just one vitamin called vitamin B. As scientists investigated this vitamin it was realized there where over 22 vitamins which where chemically different to each other, but existed in the same foods. Over time it was realized that a lot of the 22 were not actually vitamins for a variety of reasons including they could be manufactured within the body, some were not organic and whilst some were not essential to humans they where required by other organisms. This is why there are gaps in the numbering system of what is now known as the B vitamin family, which consists of, B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, Biotin (B7), Folic Acid (B9) and B12.

3 substances which are sometimes referred to as being part of the B Vitamin family are Choline, Inositol and PABA.

Choline is is an organic compound, classified as a water-soluble essential nutrient, usually grouped with in the B Vitamin family, however it does not have a B number and is known as Bp.

Inositol is not technically a Vitamin because it can be synthesised by the body.

PABA, (para-aminobenzoic acid) is not essential to human health so is not technically a Vitamin

For Ever – Anxious Fear And Eternity

When I wrote ‘Eternity Has No End’ I hadn’t realised how many people have deep anxieties about this subject. And that many people who are troubled this way also think it’s a medical health issue that may be helped like more common phobias such as claustrophobia or social phobia. In this article, I will try to show that anxiety about eternity is a whole lot more than a general medical health issue. I look at some of its roots and offer secure hope. Here is a brief, and I hope straightforward look at what is without doubt a deep subject.

– BAFFLING – Here we are in a baffling and vast cosmos, having at times an awareness of a strangely mysterious significance, at other times doubting we have any meaning at all! Is there a ‘big picture’? Where do we fit into it, or is it all without meaning? We need someone with ‘insider’ knowledge, who knows the final scheme, who is willing and able to tell us what it means, otherwise we are left guessing hopelessly. The big picture I am commending to you fits the picture at every point. And there is no attempt to skew the evidence to suit the solution! A popular contemporary solution attempts to interpret our human condition by a model which sees solutions in terms of medical or psychotherapeutic practice. This is clearly unsatisfactory, as among other things, it cannot explain or deal with real evil – the sheer callous evil we see today needs more than medical, therapeutic-based solutions.

– BIG PICTURE – Fear, a sense of utter meaninglessness, grips many people as they wonder whether they will one day face God, when time is no more. The thought of eternity is intolerable and awesome – something they would love to erase from their minds. But the more they try to suppress or forget it; it reappears as an unwanted visitor. How do we explain this? Ultimately, one claimant able to give us meaning is the source of final meaning. The one unifying truth that pulls together the whole of reality is not an elusive equation, but a Person – the Lord Jesus Christ. The New Testament is clear that Christ, (with God the Father and God the Holy Spirit), is Creator and Lord of the entire cosmos. He created our humanity – uniquely to communicate freely with the personal, living God, to love and obey him for ever – a supreme honour. But a terrible rift took place, and sin entered, and with it, confusion, hatred, disease and death. While God’s revealed truth was universally rejected, we still retain some knowledge of eternity. How is that? – ‘He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart…’ (Old Testament, Ecclesiastes 3:11). At least, now we know some of the causes of anxiety about eternity.

– ETERNITY AND JESUS – Jesus entered time, and willingly subjected himself to some its constraints. He also never ceased being the Logos (the ‘Word’), through whom all things were made (John 1:1-3). He also confirmed, ‘I am the Alpha and the Omega’ (Rev. 1:8). He is the first and the last – Lord of all, before whom earth and sky will flee away! He is the one who came to deal with that awful rift and he did so by taking our humanity and in his humble, sinless deity paying the supreme price by dying for our sins. On the third day he rose triumphant and soon after ascended to glory. And when time is no more, in eternity we shall all be called to give an account to him as the Sovereign Judge. Very many people are deeply anxious about this and with good reason.

– PEACE – OVERCOMING ANXIETY – Much of the obsessive fears about eternity are rooted in the awesome thought of facing God but being completely unprepared. People feel devastated by the thought of meeting God because they lack the secure peace and assurance of God’s loving forgiveness. Sometimes this lack of peace drives people to sustained religious devotion and church attendance – but alas such good works, while sincere, are driven by fear and do not get to the heart of the problem. Neither does looking for relief through stress-reducing methods offer real peace, they only mask the deeper issues. The way to peace with God accepts, without reservation, his wholly undeserved way of reconciliation. Own up, directly to God, that we are fearful, guilty of disobeying him, that we are in awe of his holy majesty and that we have strayed from him like lost sheep, and we are appealing to his love, which we do not deserve. We confess our sins in light of their offensiveness to God and also the wonderful …

Telenursing Approach – Evidence Based Challenge

Introduction-The term “basic health services” is defined by UNICEF and WHO (1965) as a network of co-ordinated, peripheral and intermediate health units capable of performing effectively, a selected group of functions essential to the health of an area and assuring the availability of competent professional personnel to perform these functions. WHO has also proclaimed health as a fundamental right of every individual and society.

India is a developing country with a large and diverse geographical terrain, and a huge population with a great deal of ethnic and cultural variation. It has all kinds of health care providers ranging from well qualified doctors of allopathy, homeopathy, ayurveda, registered medical practitioners to untrained providers of medical aid, herbalists, and magico-religious practitioners. The importance of the involvement of practitioners belonging to different systems of medicine in the health care system has been noted by various committees and in various health related policy documents from time to time. The National Health Policy (2002) advocated expanding the pool of medical practitioners to include a cadre of licentiates of medical practice, practitioners of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy. It further recommended that different categories of medical manpower should be permitted medical practice after adequate training. The National Population Policy (2000) recommended the involvement of manpower from different health agencies to expand the body of effective health care providers. Shrivastva Committee (1975) recommended primary health care within the community through trained workers to keep the health in the hands of the people.

The governments of developing countries are unable to deliver free health services as the basic right of the citizen in a holistic manner.Accessibility of health agency is an important aspect of its availability; hence a vital factor affecting treatment seeking behaviour of consumers. To make provision for basic health care to all the people is a difficult task for administrators in a country like India. Thus, eliminating geographical barriers, and to help develop new strategies and services to appeal to consumers’ various needs and desires is a big challenge. In spite of a host of national health policies; the health care indices significantly lag behind those of the developed countries. The quantitative and qualitative demographic transition in the population and disease profile along with inadequate health care delivery infrastructure is a fundamental concern for the country. In India, government from time to time declared deadlines for achievement of goals in health and various related areas. At present, in addition to other time bound goals of current eleventh five year plan, some of the important goals to be achieved by 2000-2015 are to increase utilization of public health facilities, and to establish a system of surveillance, national health accounts and health statistics.

Moreover, the increased need for health care has not been matched with a commensurate increase in resource, and the imbalance is growing. In developed countries telenursing applications are available in homes, home care agencies, hospital based telemedicine centres, hospices and rehabilitation centres whereas in Indian scenario, its need for implementation is being considered vis-a-vis telemedicine. The evidence based approach can mobilize application of the knowledge generated through research to meet the consumers’ health needs to bridge the gap between what is known and what to be done. Telenursing approach can serve as a new and valuable asset to utilize telecommunications to support the practice of nursing and provision of professional nursing care to the patients, health care professionals, as well as administrators on remote residential or clinical settings. The present paper presents an evidence based challenges for telenursing approach with an attempt to assess and study the trends of utilization of public and private (formal and informal) health agencies available in different communities of the Union Territory, Chandigarh, India.

Further, implementation of a holistic national health programme would require an assessment of the available health systems. In addition there is a nation wide need to find various aspects of the utilization of health services in different populations and geographical areas which may be helpful for finding out some of the reasons why the goal of “health for all” was not achieved and the utilization of public health care services was very low. It will further aid to fulfill the time bound national health goals. Thus, the considerable promise of e-health in addressing issues of quality, efficiency, cost, and access to care should be placed at the forefront of our national effort to reform healthcare.

Need of the study-With an attempt to discover the relationship between the consumer and the health agencies; the present paper intended to investigate and address major bottlenecks that may impede effective implementation of telenursing approach. Further, the need was felt for positive return on investment by targeting the consumers’ real needs and to hunt aspects which may be helpful for finding out some of the reasons for slow or …

Why Humidity Control in Healthcare Is Essential

For those not involved in the healthcare industry, it can be hard to understand what the link between healthcare and accurate humidity control. After all, what does humidity have to do with maintaining and improving health? Isn’t the variable nature of humidity something we deal with as humans?

The answer to the latter question is yes, but in a healthcare environment, there’s no denying that humidity plays a huge role – especially during the winter months when the heaters are run.

Heating systems dramatically dry the air, causing atmospheric moisture levels to drop to as low as 15% relative humidity (RH). In a workplace, humidity this low can have a number of effects, from respiratory problems, headaches, sore throats and even stress. In healthcare environments like hospitals, the effects are much worse.

For example, in an operating room low RH causes moisture to be drawn from all available sources – including skin and blood. During an operation, any body tissue that’s exposed to the low RH air will be dried, causing premature drying and promoting the formation of scabs.

There’s also the not-insignificant fact that below 40% RH, electrostatic shocks begin to build up. Using metal instruments and working on humans means that these shocks can lead to some dangerous scenarios. Outside of the theatre, those same electrostatic shocks can affect sensitive medical electronics.

The way to avoid this is through healthcare humidity control systems, designed to maintain humidity between 45 and 60% RH, subject to your requirements.

Below 45% RH, membranes in the throats and noses of young babies can very easily dry out, causing a number of health issues and requiring attention from nursing staff. Indeed, in adults with respiratory problems, low RH can also have a negative effect. That’s why in healthcare environments, we always recommend a relative humidity above 45%.

In medical environments, it’s often the case that typical humidification systems are inadequate – both in size and delivery method. Because healthcare environments require totally sterile air, it’s important that your humidity control system has a hygiene failsafe.

Those requirements mean that steam-based humidification systems, which use steam to create the moisture which is then fed into your working environment. This has the benefit of being 100% sterile, but do be warned – some steam based humidification systems utilise additives which make them unsuitable for hospital and healthcare environments where sterility is absolutely vital.

As such, it’s always important that you speak to a qualified and experienced dehumidification supplier, with links to the healthcare industry.

Holistic Health Care – What and Whom

The Baby boomers-those born 1946 through 1964-are the largest population to require health care than ever before. Medical practitioners and pharmaceutical companies are focusing on what pills, potions or surgeries the baby boomers-turned seniors will be likely to use in the next 30 – 40 years. Ironically, the majority of people tend to be concerned about their health after something major has occurred. The truth is if we consistently take good care of our health the aging process has little impact.

Baby boomers are voicing their concerns about better health, more than prior generations. However, many do not know where to find information and options, other than Traditional Western Medicine (TWM).

Few people research the plethora of side effects for prescription or over-the-counter (OTC) drugs-not to mention that prescription and OTC drugs are formulated to take over and hijack your body’s biochemistry. Prescription and OTC drugs force blood pressure to be lower/higher or force the liver to stop manufacturing healthy cholesterol. In fact, prescription or OTC drugs interfere with normal human metabolism, and that is one reason why prescription drugs are killing people. Yet, conventional medical doctors rely on propaganda about the unknown side effects of holistic health care to convince people that only prescription or OTC drugs are safe. It is NOT that they are terrified about the side effects of holistic health care-they are terrified of people being well and they won’t have their business of prescribing life-long pills and potions. Western Medicine is profit driven.

If everyone knew they could prevent any disease with plant extracts, medicinal herbs, natural vitamins, minerals, and supplements, as well as having peace of mind-the pharmaceutical and medical industry would collapse overnight.

Food for Better Eyesight – The Vision Benefits of Okra

A gummy green vegetable that is often overlooked at the grocery store but, nevertheless, is a healthy food for better vision and general health is the Okra vegetable. The Okra is a vegetable popular in the Caribbean, China and especially the South. It is chock full of vitamins, minerals and nutrients such as Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Potassium, Magnesium and Iron to name a few. Additionally, it is very low in calories and fat. This eye food spans a wide range of health benefits including cholesterol reduction, diabetes prevention, better digestive health, Cancer prevention, Brain health, and weight control to boot. Therefore, if you are interested in foods for better eyesight and general health, that are different from traditional vegetables, here are a series of reasons why adding Okra to your diet is a wise nutritional choice:

Eye Health: When it comes to vision improvement, Okra consists of the following eye promoting nutrients that help to support the healthy functioning of the visual system: Vitamin A, C, Lutein, and Beta Carotene. Vitamin A and C helps to support healthy tissues in the eyes, the mucous membranes, as well as the skin, thereby guarding against health problems associated with eye infections. Vitamin A and Beta- Carotene are antioxidants useful in the prevention of age- related vision disorders such as Macular Degeneration and Cataracts.

Okra consists of Lutein which is a potent Carotenoid credited in research studies with providing vision protection from harmful blue light and preserving sharper eyesight. It has also been shown to contribute to a reduction in the risks for Cataracts and Macular Degeneration by staving off free radicals that damage healthy eye cells.

Here are a series of the general health benefits of Okra:

Heart Health: This nutritious vegetable with its Pectin and fiber content helps in the reduction of LDL (bad cholesterol) levels thereby improving heart health.

Diabetes Prevention: Okra is known for its ability to absorb sugar efficiently in the digestive tract. Therefore, it is helpful in regulating healthy normal blood sugar levels. For example, a 2011 study published by the Journal of Pharmacy and Bio Allied Sciences, involving participants who ate dried and ground Okra peels and seeds, revealed an interesting health benefit: a reduction in the blood sugar levels of the test subjects. In Turkey roasted Okra seeds have been utilized as an effective natural home remedy to aid in the treatment of Diabetes.

Boosted Immune system and Better Digestion: there is a link between a properly working digestive system and good immunity. Therefore, Okra produces the good bacteria which is vital to improving the function of the digestive tract thereby also boosting our immune health.

Cancer Fighting Properties: With its rich antioxidant content it strengthens the body’s immune system defenses against damaging free radicals. This aids in the body’s protection from harmful cells that works in the prevention of diseases like cancer.

If you are not particularly thrilled about the taste of this nutritious food you can make it more appetizing by slicing it and adding it to gumbo, soups, or stews.

Even though Okra may not be the most popular vegetable on the planet, due to its rich vitamin and mineral content, you cannot underestimate the nutritional value of this healthy food. With health benefits ranging from better eye health, to numerous general health benefits, in addition to the advantage that comes with consuming a food very low in calories and fat, ultimately, Okra is an appealing addition to your diet.

Juice Plus Review

Is Juice Plus a Scam?

Juice Plus is a supplement that has been in existence since 1993. I looked into the product at one time as a possible source of nutritional benefit for my family. I was even interested in becoming a distributor so that I could earn a residual income, since so many people are looking for ways to improve their nutrition just like you and I. I will not say outright that the Juice Plus is a scam. I have thoroughly looked into many business opportunities, especially health related companies, and I will say that there are many fraud companies out there. I think that Juice Plus is actually one of the better companies out there, but in my search for the best quality source of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and general nutritional supplements… a little bit of research let me know that Juice Plus+ was not for me. Let me tell you why I decided that it was not for me.

The Juice Plus Company

Juice Plus is manufactured by a company called Natural Alternatives International in Santa Monica, California and distributed by National Safety Associates (NSA) in Tennessee. NSA was started in 1970 and before introducing Juice Plus, was known for other multilevel-marketed products. Juice Plus scam? No, they are just a smart company that seems to follow the business trends of the decades. Do you remember all of those water filter companies that were popular in the 1980s? Well this company sold home fire detectors when they were popular in the 70s, water filters in the early 80s, and air filters in the late 80s. They also sold educational games at one point.

While some companies in the past have made multilevel-marketing look bad, there is nothing wrong with using the method of sales distribution known as multilevel-marketing. If done right, it can benefit more people than traditional marketing, save people money and can also help get a product out to many who may have never learned about the product.

So from a business standpoint, it looks like they have the right idea. They follow the trends.

The Juice Plus Products

Their main products are the Juice Plus, which are not juice really, but powder in capsules. This is better than juice because juice supplements like the popular Acai berry juice, noni juice, Mona vie juice or Mangosteen juice products will begin to oxidate as soon as you open the bottle. This liquid oxidation is harmful to the body. The Juice Plus blend include great ingredients that come from fruits such as acerola berries, apples, cranberries, oranges, papaya, peaches, and pineapple. Their Juice Plus+ contains vegetables that are sourced from barley, beets, broccoli, cabbage, carrots, kale, oats, parsley, spinach, and tomato. So to answer the question is Juice Plus fraud, I say that there is no Juice Plus scam, since they sell real products with decent ingredients.

It has become general knowledge that by increasing your fruit and vegetable intake on a daily basis, that you can improve your health and wellness. Eating more fruits and vegetables will actually help your body also get rid of free radical cells as well as a natural antioxidant in the body. I just do not feel that this product has enough fruits and vegetables in it for me is all.

A Few Juicy Problems

Their Juice Plus Gummies supplement for kids were found to have around 80% corn syrup and 10% beef gelatin, making the product almost without nutritional benefit. So these are not much better than the gummy vitamin/mineral bears that you can buy at your local store. Both are basically just candy!

I assume that their other products probably have a higher quality of nutrition than this but I saw some other problems that made me shy away.

The Biggest Problem

I could not find any of the product labels on their site.

The biggest problem that I saw was that in all of the poking around on their company website, I could not find any of the product labels for any of their products! What are they trying to hide? Sure they list a few fruits and vegetables, but they don’t say how much of each fruit that they use. They don’t show you the nutritional facts so you can see how much sugar and natural or artificial ingredients are in each product.

I did not like that I had to buy the product to see the product labels.

Some other problems that I saw …

1. The products were not unique enough

2. There was not enough research and science

3. The testimonials were lacking

4. The products were not manufactured to high enough standards to make me want to pay the extra money for them

5. Not all of their ingredients were organic …

Intravenous Drug Used As Sleep Aid Medication For Insomnia

With so many news reports about Michael Jackson’s death, what have we learned? Did Michael Jackson take a more powerful sleep aid medication? Reports that he suffered from insomnia, Jackson’s apparent drug of choice was administered intravenously as a general anesthetic used to sedate patients for surgery in a medical facility or hospital. It’s purpose is to induce sleep quickly for a surgical procedure such as a colonoscopy with an IV drip. The patient will awaken quickly as soon as you turn the IV drip off.

This type of medication is only meant for use as an anesthesia and not a sleep aid for insomnia or any other sleep disorder, because this drug is very powerful that the patient’s breathing could cease or some other critical failure could occur. For this reason alone it should be used in operating rooms and or other medical facilities where doctors and trained medical employees can monitor the patient if something were to go wrong.

It has also been implicated in drug abuse, with people using it to “chill out” or to commit suicide. The powerful drug has a very narrow window of time meaning an overdose may stop a person’s breathing due to a buildup of carbon dioxide, causing the heart to beat irregularly and leading to cardiac arrest.

According to a news report on CNN, Jackson asked a registered nurse to help him with his insomnia by using this drug and she refused his requests. According to the nurse, on June 21 a member of Jackson’s staff begged her to help him after what seemed like an adverse drug reaction. She feared he used this intravenous drug, because he was complaining that half his body was hot and the other half was cold, which was a sign that something had affected his central nervous system.

The drug has been known to create a painful burning sensation which is treated with another prescription drug which was reported also found in Jackson’s room. Michael Jackson’s sister, has stated in an exclusive interview with London newspaper the News of the World, that she believes Michael’s body was to fragile for such a strong drug. “I think it shocked his system so much it caused his death.” she said.

Not only could Jackson have medical issues resulting from his insomnia, could he be struggling with an addiction to prescription drugs such as pain and sleep aid medications? The autopsy showed that his stomach only had partial digested pills. If addicted, over time it is likely that he built up a tolerance to the prescription medication which could have messed up his sleep cycle causing him to abuse these medications.

Unfortunately, Jackson’s doctor probably told him that it was safe when monitored and decided to take it even with knowing the risks involved. The nurse urged him that day to go to the hospital, but Jackson did not go and later died suffering from cardiac arrest.

Jackson will be laid to rest at Holly Terrace in the Great Mausoleum at Glendale Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Glendale, Calif. September 3, 2009. Jackson was 50 years old. R.I.P. Michael.

Biltong and Its Many Health Benefits

Are you a meat lover? If yes, then you should definitely try biltong. This special kind of all-meat product originated in Southern Africa and after sometime it also invaded the European, American, and Australian markets. It is often likened to beef jerky only that it differs in ingredients and preparations.

Many people buy biltong because it’s a great alternative to unhealthy snacks like chips, burgers, fries, and the like. People who are watching their weight should be happy to know that it also contains fewer calories compared to beef jerky in the market today. You can enjoy a handful of biltong twice a week and never have to worry about gaining pounds, only muscles. You stay healthy and fit too.

• No chemical content

Some meat products are hazardous to your health because of their very high chemical content. The contain ingredients like monosodium glutamate, sodium nitrate, artificial coloring and flavors, and preservatives. Thankfully, biltong doesn’t contain any of these. No wonder, many prefer it over other dried meat products. Its ingredients are only vinegar, black pepper, salt, coriander, sugar, and meat.

Biltong’s health benefits aren’t only ideal for people on the go. Did you know that children can also enjoy this product? As a matter of fact, mothers buy biltong for teething children. The chewy and delicious taste makes biltong an excellent alternative to commercial teething products.

Good Vices That Benefit Our Health

VICE #1: Sleeping in.

It’s free, natural and has no drawbacks. More than giving you energy, getting enough quality sleep boosts your immune system, your memory and might even help you manage your weight. Lack of sleep has been linked to high blood pressure, glucose intolerance and belly fat, all known to be risk factors for heart disease. You should aim for the research supported 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night. If you always seem to drag yourself out of bed, no matter how much sleep you get the night before, talk to your doctor. A good night’s sleep is not a luxury… it’s necessary to your health and well-being.

VICE #2: Mental health days.

Who doesn’t enjoy sneaking off for a well deserved time out? Turns out taking time off has been shown by research to relieve stress, lowering your blood pressure and thus your risk for heart disease. It also aids creative thinking, and may help with symptoms of depression. The good news is that the length of the vacation doesn’t matter one bit in terms of how happy it will make you. The best part is the anticipation.

VICE #3: Enjoying intimate pleasures.

A vice in some eyes to be sure… sex is, after all, the most pleasurable form of activity there is. It releases feel-good endorphins and oxytocin, the hormone that helps promote attachment, which very much benefits mental health. One study found that those who were sexually active one or two times a week had raised levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A that is thought to protect from colds and infections. As with many vices, sexual activity brings the chance for unintended consequences like infections and pregnancy, which is why it does not top the list.

VICE #4: A daily serving of chocolate.

A worthy, well loved vice. A square or two of the dark kind, without as much sugar and fat as milk chocolate, will do wonders. Dark chocolate and cocoa (75% cocoa content) might help lower blood pressure, cut the risk of stroke and bring other cardiovascular benefits according to more than one study. Dark chocolate has flavonoids that are believed to improve the flexibility of blood vessels, making them more resistant to plaque buildup.

Another study published last year found that eating 1.4 ounces of dark chocolate a day for 14 days reduced the stress hormones in highly anxious people.

VICE #5: Girls/Boys nights out.

Finally, research to back up a vice we all enjoy. A number of recent studies have shown how big an impact friends and family have on our behavior. From what we eat and drink, to how much we weigh (for better or worse). Strong social ties have also been found to bring benefits like fewer colds, better brain health and a longer life. Friendships are so good for you, as long as you’re in a well-balanced relationship with give and take being equal. Avoid those who are toxic to you.

VICE #6: Full fat dressing/sauces.

When it comes to vices, full fat anything is sure to be on the list. The thing is, there’s really no need for you to deprive yourself of the full fat variety of your favorite dressing or sauce. These “loaded” versions not only taste better, but they remind us that fats serve a real health purpose, as long as you get the right kinds in the right amount. Try for 10% (no more than 30%) of your daily fat intake to come from monounsaturated fats (vegetable oils, avocados, many nuts and seeds) that cut your risk of heart disease and stroke.

Omega-3 fatty acids (salmon and tuna, flaxseed and walnuts) also reduce the risk of heart disease and might even help ease symptoms of depression, rheumatoid arthritis and other problems. A meal that has a little fat leaves you feeling more satisfied, so you end up actually eating less.

VICE #7: Your morning coffee.

One of the most well known of the vices, coffee continues to be popular. If you’re like many who need that cup of coffee to get going in the morning, don’t feel guilty. There’s a lot of research that suggests coffee doesn’t just pick you up, it also fights heart disease and some cancers. It might also help you perform harder, longer workouts. Moderate coffee drinking in midlife has been linked to lower risks of dementia and Alzheimer’s. What’s more, every added cup of coffee you drink a day drops your risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 7%.

VICE #8: Getting a massage.

They may be an expensive indulgence, but massages (by a pro or a loved one) are a vice that is well worth the guilt. Being touched regularly leaves you healthier. Women in a 2008 study noted less pain, depression, anxiety and anger …
