Why You Cannot Trust TSH 3 and 4 Test Results for Thyroid Health and Wellness

I advise all of my clients to specify a full thyroid panel of tests when they get a checkup. Those of us with autoimmune diseases and those with degenerative diseases such as cancer, obesity and other potentially serious diseases often have undetected thyroid issues. In addition to those with health issues, men and women who are 40 and older, whether they have diseases or not, should request full thyroid panel testing when getting a physical.

I have vitiligo — an autoimmune disease that is often seen as a symptom of a malfunctioning thyroid. Medical doctors were slow to recognize the correlation between thyroid health and vitiligo. I was one advocate in the 1990s who encouraged fellow vitiligo sufferers to take my research to their doctors and demand, if they had to, thyroid testing. Back then, most medical doctors thought of vitiligo as only a “cosmetic” disease. Unfortunately, many still do.

What I’ve found over the years is, many people like myself, have thyroid problems that go undetected when our doctors test for TSH 3 & 4, without more thorough testing. I’ve has symptoms of hypo-thyroidism most of my life, but not once has it ever shown up in TSH 3 & TSH4 tests. Ever.

I had a physical 2 weeks ago. I requested the full panel of thyroid tests. The doctor questioned why I wanted it, asking if I had problems in the past. Though my thyroid always tested within “normal” range, I have known I was hypo-thyroid pretty much all of my life based on my lifelong vitiligo and other symptoms such as low body temperature. So, I had to persuade this doctor to do what she should do for every patient — fully check my thyroid for dysfunction.

When my test results came in the mail this past Monday, my TSH 3 and TSH 4 showed a perfectly normal thyroid range; however, the tests that I had to persuade the doctor to do showed a different story. It showed that I was bordering hypothyroid/Hashimoto’s disease. These results are very typical of those of us with vitiligo and/or other autoimmune diseases. It is also typical of many sufferers of other diseases, and for many whose thyroid tests in normal range in the standard TSH 3 & TSH 4 tests.

Undetected thyroid problems are epidemic in the USA, and a large undetected part of the problems of obesity, diabetes and cancers, as many natural health professionals such as myself believe. In the USA, the average person gets little to no iodine in their diet, which is necessary to nourish the thyroid. Bread eaters are blocking absorption of the iodine that may occasionally get in their iodine-poor standard American diets. Supplementing iodine is mandatory for health, thanks to removal of iodine from, and the addition of bromine to bread products.

Since my 20’s when I uncovered my own hypo-thyroidism/Hashimoto’s tendency via symptoms and by performing the Basal Temperature Test, I’ve supplemented to improve and nourish my thyroid. My current regimen includes Iodoral iodine, plus raw thyroid glandular supplements to nourish my thyroid to function properly. My body usually signals me when my regimen needs tweaking. I encourage my clients to find a qualified endocrinologist in addition to learning how to monitor their own thyroids via the Basal Temperature test. Once clients learn the symptoms of thyroid problems and learn to listen to their bodies, they often can tell when something is off.

Since many doctors do not go beyond the TSH 3 & 4 thyroid tests, I encourage you to take a proactive role in your health care. Insist on full panel thyroid tests. If I had not insisted on the Thyroid Antibodies test, my bloodwork would’ve missed a very important fact — I have a thyroid problem! Since the thyroid controls every metabolic process in my body, my entire state of health — both physical and mental — were at stake.

As stated earlier, I’ve regulated my thyroid since my early 20s and I can sense when my thyroid is off. I knew I had to up my supplements based on how I felt and how my body was holding onto weight. I listen to my body and I know when I either need to lower or raise my supplements, which changes with age, stress levels, lifestyle changes, etc.

A simple basal temperature thermometer is helpful to gauge your own thyroid health, with the Basal Temperature Test. Shake the thermometer down at night, and check your armpit temperature as soon as you awaken, without stirring much, for 5 consecutive days. If your temperature is consistently low, consider further testing, because it signals thyroid issues, despite TSH 3 and 4 results. Guys, you dance on a volcano! There is no universal password which could be safe for all the documents. You can make up the longest password you are able to remember, but for some programs do not require them to be so complicated, you risk losing all your other documents. Interestingly, more than 80% (2) of responders simply forget their passwords. That is human nature! Believe me or not, network administrators reap a good benefit from it.

Poor password policy management brings about a great demand and, consequently, provokes cost increase in IT help desk services which ends up in heavy expenses for the end-users. The 7 Macrominerals – Essential Nutrients For All Round Health

Chloride was discovered as a compound by Carl Whilhelm Scheele in 1774. It was later isolated by Sir Humphry Davy in 1807. Around 0.15% of an average adult’s bodyweight is chloride. This macromineral has a number of roles in the body which include assisting with the production of glandular hormones, maintaining blood pressure, maintaining fluid balance, removing waste materials from the body and supporting metabolism.

The RDA for chloride increases with age. Children aged 0-6 years require around 180mg per day whilst adults require 750mg per day. The best food sources of this nutrient include butter (1300mg per 100g), olives (300mg per 100g) and whole grain bread (860mg per 100g).

Whilst there is no recommended upper limit (UL) for chloride some people have experienced breathing difficulties, fluid retention and high blood pressure if they eat extremely large amounts. Not consuming enough of this nutrient can also have adverse effects on your body leading to muscles spasms and weakness.

3) MAGNESIUM

Magnesium was initially discovered by Henry Wicker in 1618 in the form of ‘Epsom Salts’. It was later isolated in 1808 by Sir Humphry Davy. Approximately 0.05% of an average adult’s bodyweight is magnesium. It is responsible for over 300 biochemical reactions in the human body which include promoting metabolism, helping the muscles and nerves relax and supporting healthy bone growth.

The RDA for magnesium increases with age. Children aged 0-6 months need just 30mg per day of this macromineral whilst adults aged 31 years and older require considerably more (men need 420mg per day, women need 320mg per day and pregnant women need 360mg per day). The richest food sources of this nutrient are quite varied with almonds (279mg per 100g), brazil nuts (229mg per 100g) and spinach (87mg per 100g) all containing high levels.

Consuming 1000mg or more of magnesium per day can lead to a number of negative symptoms including diarrhea, fatigue and stomach cramps. Failing to get enough of this nutrient can also have negative effects and cause muscle cramps, nausea, numbness and vomiting.

4) PHOSPHORUS

Phosphorus was discovered by accident in 1669 during an experiment where the German alchemist Henning Brand tried to convert metals into gold. It represents around 1% of an average adult’s bodyweight. The main role of phosphorus is to work in conjunction with calcium and promote the development of strong bones and teeth. It also activates the B-complex vitamins and assists in the production of the genetic information carriers – deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) and ribonucleic acid (RNA).

The RDA for this macromineral varies with age. Children aged 0-6 months need to consume just 100mg per day of this nutrient. This requirement increases to 1250mg per day for children aged 9-18 years old but then drops to 700mg per day for adults aged 19 years and older. HOW MUCH should we have?

So, if you are 120 pounds, you should have 60 oz of water; if you weigh 200 pounds, you should have 100 oz. However, that does not mean you have to drink it all. When you eat lots of fruits and veggies, you also are supplying your body with fluids since they are made of mostly water. Depending on how many fruits and vegetables you eat a day, you might be able to add up to a half quart or even a quart of the daily fluid you need.

Is it possible to drink TOO MUCH water?

The answer is "yes". My brother and sister-in-law told me there was a girl on TV that was doing some sort of contest with her friends to see who could drink the most water before having to go to the bathroom. Well, this girl who won the contest lost her life! Can you imagine? So much for more water is better!

The reason for her death was probably that her body was depleted of potassium and electrolyte levels because she had drunk too much water . When we drink excess amounts of water, we can get a condition called psychogenic polydipsia, which causes potassium and electrolyte levels to become dangerously low. This may lead to your death. We do not usually drink TOO MUCH water, but I just want to make you aware of the consequences if you do that since some people always think that more is better when MODERATION is always the key.

WHEN should we drink the water?

Well, contrary to normal belief, it should not be mostly at meal times . At this time you should only have 4-8 ounces and make sure it is room temperature. Any drink that is extremely cold or has ice in it makes it harder for your body to digest your food.

Dr. Colbert suggests in his book "The Seven Pillars of Health" that we should drink most our fluids two hours after meals and up to 30 minutes before meals. You do not have to get all your fluids from water either. Like I said earlier, eating lots of fruits and veggies can count to up one quart of fluid, so that means if you need to 4 quarts of fluid a day, you can make it only 3 quarts of just plain water or tea, or other drinks that are not highly sugared or have filled with caffeine. Coffee counts, as long as you do not have more than 2 cups a day.

Is all water equal?

No, it is not. There is better water than others. It used to be that here in the US we could drink tap water and it was good for us. Unfortunately, that is not the case anymore. There are many contaminants in it that municipal treatments can either detect nor remove from the water supply, even though the EPA does check the water daily.

I Protect My Family, Do You?

I am a mom of two. I love my kids and I love my husband. I will do anything to protect them from anything that can harm our family and them as individuals. I am always vigilant: where they go, where they are at the moment when I look for them and who they are with, of course, without being nosy. With all the crimes and circumstances that affect the family nowdays, it is always important that someone should safeguard the people that we love the most.
Specifically, I protect my family from:

1. Diseases.

I make sure that my family is always healthy. I cook them healthy foods everyday from breakfast until dinner. They say that the most important meal of the day is breakfast so I make sure that whatever they eat for breakfast will provide them with the energy that they will need for the rest of the day. Cereals are not enough for me. Each food group should be represented. That is also the same for their lunch or dinner. However, since my husband works and my kids eat their lunch at school, I simply monitor what they eat by asking them when they get home. Deliveries are not very frequent in our house. As much as possible, I cook dinner as I am a stay home mom.

I also make sure that my kids take their vitamins daily. My husband has his own as well. I specifically focus my attention to strengthening their immune system as this mechanism is the best protection against diseases. I am aware that new strings of diseases happen that is why I have my kids vaccinated.

2. Brokenness.

I grow up in a family who loves each other. My father was always a good provider and he respects my mom and loves her dearly. This respect and love is then reflected to us. We grow up respecting each other, as siblings and as sons / daughters. Whenever there were conflicts between any members of our family, we make sure that it is immediately resolved.

I keep my communication line with my kids open. Whenever they need someone to talk to, I always make myself available. I try to be the best wife to my husband-tending to his every need and making sure that I am able to provide more than what he expects from me. I do not want my kids growing up with divorced parents. I believe that I am the glue that keeps our family intact.

3. Identity theft.

This is a very serious crime that is very rampant nowdays. I, as a mother, always ensure that our personal information ate kept private so that we can evade any attempt of identity theft in our family. My husband is fond of using his credit card as he always travels. I monitor his credit statements and take account of every purchase or charges that are incurred. This way, I know that no other person is using my husband's name for their own personal gain. I take the issue of identity theft formally as I am aware that identity theft can ruin our family.

Are Vitamin Supplements Beneficial For Our Nutritional Health

A widely debated nutrition topic is vitamin supplementation, and specifically – are multivitamins beneficial to our nutritional health, and should we be supplementing with multivitamins.

Dietary supplements are widely used, with the most popular of these being the multivitamins. Research and surveys done by the Nielsen Company show that around 40% of the population worldwide are taking these vitamin supplements, with usage in the United States being the greatest at around 54%.

And why are these so heavily used? The most common reasons are things like covering for known diet deficiencies and ensuring that a balanced diet is being eaten – the latter being the reason given the most often in the US at around 62%.

No doubt that vitamin supplements are used so often, because of the millions of dollars spent on advertising and marketing them as being necessary for nutritional health. And apparently the US as the fast food capital of the world, and the country said to have the worst health, thinks that these vitamin pills are going to make up for all of the fried foods, donuts, and sugar that is consumed.

A Case For Vitamin Supplementation

Now, there are reasons that more vitamins and minerals may be needed. For instance, it would be necessary in for correcting certain deficiencies in the body. And research has clearly shown that through the years mineral depletion from the soil has occurred, as the result of feet of top soil being beaten from the earth's surface.

As well, different farming practices, including the tons of herbicides and pesticides that have been applied to the soil, have killed micro-organisms that are needed for re-establishing soil mineralization. And who knows what you are getting from genetically modified and fortified foods as one of the answers to this problem.

It has been said that if the body does not have their proper minerals, then it can not properly use its vitamins. And Linus Pauling, who is a two-time Nobel Prize winner, said: "You can trace every sickness, every disease, and every ailment to a mineral deficiency."

So definitely there is a case for adding more vitamins to our system – but is doing so through multivitamin supplements an effective way to do this?

Are Multivitamin Supplements Effective

In light of how unhealthy many people's diet and nutritional health is, along with some of the soil mineralization issues discussed above, it would appear that a multivitamin supplement could be very helpful.

However, there are many research studies that have shown that not only are these supplements not effective, they are actually harmful to our health. These studies include:

· Smokers supplementing with beta-carotene [a precursor to vitamin A] have higher lung cancer rates.

· People with previous heart attacks supplementing with beta-carotene having a greater risk of dying from cardiovascular disease

· A clinical trial studying the effect of vitamin E and selenium for reducing prostate cancer showed higher cancer rates from the vitamin E, and also an increased risk for diabetes from the selenium

· An aggregate of studies that included over 200,00 people who supplemented with vitamin AE had an increase in mortality

· And numerous other studies on vitamin supplementation showing an increase in the risks and occurrences for cancer, heart disease, damage of the kidneys, and bone fractures

Whole Food Multivitamin Supplements

You can see the different sides of the vitamin supplement effectiveness debate: (1) our nutritional health and body absolutely needs vitamins, and may have an additional requirement because of deficiency or smaller amount received from the foods we eat (2) but there are studies showing that supplementing with vitamins may not be effective, and can even be harmful to our health.

That is quite a dilemma, but there is something important that must be understood; the undering issue is the source of the vitamins being taken – from the highly regarded nutritionist, Judith DeCava:

"This is what occurs with all synthetic vitamins: the body treats them as toxins, leading to the 'expensive urine' of excess vitamin intake referred to repeatedly, since the human system via the urinary tract attempts to rid itself of the major quantity of such foreign chemicals. "

The problems shown in the studies do exist, but they also are giving a skewed view of the nutritional health benefits from vitamin supplements. The reason for this is because the studies are being done with synthetic vitamins that may be taken in mega doses and / or single isolated vitamins only.

And bodies need the synergies from a complex of vitamins, like what is found in whole foods, and not is huge amounts that far excess the recommended upper daily limits.
