What is a Healthy Eating Plan?

Healthy eating is important for everyone, from babies to the elderly. Learning to eat well is more than just eating a variety of foods so that your body gets the proper nutrients. It is also about enjoyment of foods and maintaining a healthy weight. Anyone can eat for good health. It involves 2 simple steps. First is to eat foods from all the different food groups. The second step is to eat a variety of foods from each group every day. Sounds simple. However so many people are not following a healthy eating plan. Busy lifestyles, availability of fast food, advertising and a lack of understanding of what healthy food is, all work against people trying for healthier eating. Unhealthy eating causes illness and weight problems. Type 2 diabetes is increasing dramatically and is directly linked to the increase in obesity. Heart disease and some cancers are also linked to obesity.

A study by the Medical Journal of Australia found that 56% of Australian adults are considered overweight or obese. This is a 61% increase in obesity since 1991 Un-treated obesity poses significant, even life-threatening health risks.

Everyone understands the importance of having car/home/ insurance. Have you considered the importance of nutritional insurance? This means eating the foods that will protect you against future disease, and understanding the benefits nutritional supplements can provide.

If you are currently not following a healthy plan you will be surprised that you are most likely not eating enough. You may need to increase the amount of food you consume.

Healthy Dog Food – How To Choose The Right Brand For Your Dog

Choosing the right healthy dog food can be one of the most important decisions that you make for your dog. One benefit is that you can be sure of providing your pet with all the nutrients that are necessary for a healthy and strong animal. You will avoid expensive visits to the vet while also ensuring that man's best friend provides you with companionship for a long time. Finding the best foods for your pet is simply a matter of reading the labels and understanding the ingredients that are included in the product.

Here are some suggestions for buying the best product for your dog:

A great product is one that has high levels of proteins . Dogs are carnivorous by nature and their digestive system is designed to digest raw meat. Therefore, a great meal is one that contains raw meat because this is more nutritious for your pet. Protein helps to build your dog's immune system as well as facilitate its growth. High quality protein should form about a fifth of your dog's diet, and this can be provided in the form of chicken or even lamb as opposed to meat byproducts or a bone meal.

The carbohydrate content in the healthy dog food should be in the right amount because too many carbohydrates can cause your dog to become bloated and have excess gas. Although carbohydrates in the right amount are good for your dog, these are usually used as fillers in most commercial products and so you need to choose foods that have less of carbohydrates.

Fat is also an important part of a healthy diet. Some of the most common forms of fat in commercial products are lard, poultry fat, tallow, cotton seed oil as well as hydrogenated vegetable oils. You should read the label carefully because most products contain too much fat in them. Adult dogs need a minimum of five percent fat in their diet and a maximum of fifteen percent.

If you are providing dry healthy dog food then you need to compare brands in order to find the best product for your pet. You need to understand the ingredients that have been used to make these products. If you are unsure about a particular ingredient then you need to do come research. You can consult with your local veterinarian, research on the internet, or visit your local public library to find more information on the proper feeding of your dog.

Make sure there are no artificial ingredients, meat by products or chemicals in the products.that you buy for your dog. You should also check to see if the product has been formulated to suit the needs of your dog. For example, some products are formulated for overweight dogs, senior dogs, or dogs with allergies.

Be sure to check the expiration date on any product that your purchase. Stores make every effort to remove expired items from the shelf, however, checking this information is in the best interest of both you and your dog.

Healthy Dog Food Brands – Top 4 Hypoallergenic Dog Food Brands

What are the healthy dog food brands that you can trust when it comes to your dog's health. If you want your dog to live as long as possible and have a high quality of life then the top 4 dog hypoallergenic dog food brands you should realize that. Remember, you owe it to your best friend to feed him or her as best as you can because they do not have a choice in the matter and are 100% reliant on your for the best life that they can have.

Important Foreword

Before I give you my list you need to understand two important things.

First, the dog food market is dominated by big business and just a handful of companies have located most of the market. Such commercial dog food is full of ingredients that can cause allergic reactions in many dogs. Some of it even contains dangerously high levels of substances such as fluoride and acrylamides. Remember, health regulations for dog foods are nowhere near as stringent as for human foods. In my opinion, you risk your dog getting cancers and a lifetime of allergic symptoms on such foods.

Second, my list below is my personal top 4. It is not ranked in any particular order because every dog is different. However, the foods below are among the most healthy brands because they are hypoallergenic dog food brands / formulas and so are specifically formulated to be as healthy as a commercial dog food can be. Most, if not all, do not contain grains and other common allergens. There are alternatives despite and I mention this later.

The Top 5 List Of Hypoallergenic Dog Food Brands

Orijen – You can sense the quality of this top-tier dog food as soon as you open the bag and take a deep whiff. It smells so good that you'd be forgiven for wanting to eat it yourself! What is unique about Orijen is that it contains no grain at all (which many dogs are allergic to). The ingredients are also all locally sourced.

Avoderm – The unique selling point of this food is that it contains avocado which is rich in nutrients and especially good for the skin. However, this is a little controversial because some dog owners do not want to risk using this food because the skin and pit of avocados are toxic. These are of course removed as part of the food preparation process (only the flesh is used) and Avoderm swear by the safety of their food which you can read about here: http://www.avodermnatural.com/About/why_avocados.htm

Evanger's – This company is known for producing game and specialty-meat dog foods, both canned and dry. The canned foods are quite rich and can resemble a soup when opened. Some dogs will love this food but others may turn their nose up at it. If your dog has a meat allergy to one type of meat (or you are yet to discover which) then this food is great because you'll only find one type of meat in each can.

Life's Abundance – the entire range of this food all contain chicken protein and the virtues of chicken fat in particular are extolled. So long as your dog has no allergies to chicken, this makes for a better than average food for him or her. These products also contain grain which is no bad thing but if your dog has allergies to it then you should avoid this brand.

Downside To Hypoallergenic Dog Food Brands

These brands are way better than commercial (cheaper) dog food out there and if you feed your dog on them then they will be healthier than 90% of all other dogs out there.

The major downside is the expense. Because most people do not feed their dogs high quality food then it means that you must pay a premium to do so for your own dog. However, there is one excellent alternative.

If you create your own dog dog food then you can feed your dog food that is just as good or even better than all the hypoallergenic brands above. That's because you have full control over the ingredients, where they are sourced from and how they are prepared. What's more, not only does it work out to be much cheaper but most recipes are also very easy and quick to prepare so do not think that you are sacrificing convenience when going "homemade".

Food for Healthy Nails

Nails are a protective horn at the end of our most sensitive extremities: fingers and

toes. They can often become injured from accidents or crushing weight such as

heavy walking or running. They can also become infected from bacterial or fungal

infections as well as separated from the nail bed or chipped from harsh weather.

The nails are often a reflection of our overall health or nutritional deficiencies. Some

ways to listen to what your nails are trying to tell you are:

o Iron/Protein/Calcium Deficiency = brittle, concave, ridged, white half moons

o Too much salt = external fibrous growths

o Nervousness / hyper thyroid = separation of the nail bed

o Respiratory Difficulties = bluish discoloration

o Bronchial Difficulties = yellowish discoloration

o Anemia = pale nail beds

o Vitamin A Deficiency = peeling nails

o Zinc Deficiency = poor nail growth

o Vegetable Quality Oils Deficiency = thin, brittle nails

o Consumption Extremes in Diet (especially meats and refined foods) = washboard

What we eat actually does affect the appearance of these external parts of our

bodies. Start paying attention to your hands (and feet!) and feeding your body right.

The food we put IN the body affects the health of our nails, but that doesn’t mean to

completely ignore the food we put ON the body either. Contrary to many fabulously

smart marketing campaigns you don’t need to spend a lot of money on chemically

enhanced products to experience strength and beauty on your outside.

Natural oils are an excellent way to treat the external condition of the finger and

toenails. Different oils affect the body differently. A great way to determine what oil

would suit your body best is to examine your heritage and connect to the

predominant oil in that part of the world.

Once you have determined which is best for your particular body’s need use some

time in the evening to take a “nail bath” (remember … the skin is our most

absorbent organ …)

1. Allow your nails to soak in a small bowl of oil or gently rub the oil into the nails

2. Cover with cotton gloves, cotton socks

3. Sleep

Top Three Oils to Treat Your Nails Right

1. Coconut Oil: one of the few significant plant sources of lauric acid. This medium

chain fatty acid, which is also found in human milk, enhances brain function and the

immune system.

2. Palm Kernel: when unrefined, this high saturation oil is the one of the most stable

of oils providing strength and ultimate saturation to the skin.

3. Olive Oil: the most stable vegetable oil, high in vitamin E, provides support to the

liver and gallbladder (yes, no matter how you take it into the body).

Now, take a minute and think about how those chemically enhanced skin and nail

products are affecting your body …

To your energy and success, Heather

Healthier Food For Your Cats

Cats are very special animals and need very healthy food. Since cats are obligate carnivores which means they are meat eaters they do not have the ability to process corn or wheat as food.

If you think about what a cat would eat in the wild if they had to provide their own food, they would be catching birds, mice or other small prey. If in this search they ran through a corn field, would they stop to eat some corn? Have you ever thought about this? About the only food other than meats and bone that they would find would be the food in the stomach of the prey that they have caught. Thus when feeding our cats, we would want to closely emulate their chosen diet.

When feeding dry food or kibble, read the listed ingredients. The first ingredient listed is of course the largest amount of the ingredient in the container. Meal is the name of the meat or other substance that is included in the package. Chicken Meal is chicken that has been cooked to a meal so that it can be processed into kibble. If the ingredients listed contain corn or wheat you do not want to feed this to an obligate carnivore. Potatoes are not a food that is used by the cat nor are vegetables in larger amounts. Remember when you think about the prey that they hunt a minimal amount of these substances are in the stomach and can be handled by the cat as nutrition. Food color is very needless in cat food as are garlic, yucca, salt and pepper. The more items that you read that you do not understand and have a hard time pronouncing are useless in your cat food. A little brown rice is much more digestible.

In recent years it has come to the attention of the public that cat foods with ingredients coming from China carry an ingredient called wheat gluten which has been found to be a contamination that has caused death in numbers of pets being fed foods that were thought to be safe and in essence have caused kidney failure and death. Recently this same ingredient has been found in baby milk formula in China and has sickened or killed some children. How horrible! This ingredient, Melamin, is used to boost the protein content and is deadly. Reading the labels of the foods you feed your cats is essential to their future health and life.

Preservatives are another ingredient that needs to be looked at closely. If you have used a cat food recommended by your vet and made by the Hills Company, it quite possibly contains two ingredients that have been removed from the human food sources. They are BHA and BHT. Why on earth would that be included by a company that makes food for animals that have a need for very specialized foods when it is a known killer of humans? Why would a Veterinarian knowingly prescribe this for a pet that is sick or in need of special food? Most veterinarians have very little training in the feeding of healthy cats and dogs. As a breeder of a very special cat, the RagaMuffin, I have done much research in the care and feeding of cats. I want the best for the cats I place in homes where they are loved and cared for as very special family members.

My recommended food, if you are feeding a dry or kibble type of food is one made by a company in Florida by the name of Trilogy. This food is the safest and healthiest that I have found for pets. It is produced and shipped directly to your door so there is no warehouse storage for long periods of time. It does not go to a retailer that must then put it into storage in their warehouses prior to it’s being sent to the retail store for sale to the public. You will not find wheat mites from lengthy warehouse storage. Since it does not contain any corn or wheat it is totally usable by the cat so it is nutrient dense. Your cat does not have to eat a large amount in order to satisfy its nutritional requirements. This also prevents overly used litter boxes which is a wonderful thing.

Just a reminder, cats are a sensitive animal and many can be affected by ingredients that are harmful so use care and caution in feeding your feline companion.

Tips For Finding Healthy Food

One of the best pieces of advice anyone can give for finding healthy food is to shop at your local farmer's market. Since all of the food on sale is grown within a few miles of the market, you know it's fresh. Everything for sale at the market is real, unprocessed, whole food – as opposed to the bags of chips, cartons of frozen meals, and packages of ice cream at your local supermarket.

I've never seen a rack of candy bars at a farmer's market, hoping to snag you with that one last purchase of sugar while you wait in line. You will not find a hundred feet of shelf space filled with packaged cookies and snacks, next to another hundred feet filled with expensive, sugar-laden flavored water. All you get at the farmer's market is real, down-to-earth food.

You can even find sellers selling pasture-raised beef and lamb at many Saturday markets, and most markets have at least one vendor selling fresh eggs from free-range chickens – the kind of chickens that actually get to look for bugs and scratch in the grass , as opposed to the "free-range" eggs you see at the supermarket. You can talk to the person who sells the vegetables, meat and eggs, and many farmers welcome you to visit the farm to see how the food is grown.

If you do not have a farmer's market close by and you can not grow some of your own food in the back yard, the next best thing is to shop from the outer portion of your local supermarket. Almost every grocery store is set up so that most of the processed, highly-refined products take up space in the middle aisles, and the real food – eggs, fresh vegetables, milk and meat – are located around the outside. The exception is the frozen veggies in the freezer section, which are good for you, and the donuts in the outside section, which are not.

Many of the processed foods you find on a supermarket shelf have labels that actually the food is healthy, but there may be better options. Labels can be both confusing and intentionally misleading. Some terms, such as "free range" and "natural," are not regulated, so they can be used for foods that would not qualify for these terms if we really knew how the animals or veggies were raised. Other labels, such as the "heart healthy" label, may be placed on processed foods filled with sugar and high-fructose corn syrup, but they qualify for the label because they have no cholesterol or they're low in fat. Some traditionally healthy foods, like apples, are processed into delicate apple sauce, heavy on the sugar, so it is not healthy any more. To avoid almost all these foods, buy whole, natural foods instead.

Healthy foods are out there, they are not necessarily expensive, and they're easy to find if you commit yourself to looking for them.

The Mediterranean food diet is among the healthiest diet plans you'll find, and nutritionists are more than enthusiastic about it. Researchers believe that this diet will provide the healthiest menu, and in the long term, the healthiest lifestyle and the longest life expectancy.

With a list of foods that includes small portions of red meat, chicken, turkey and eggs, not only is this diet satisfying and filled with tasty recipe choices, it is a way to keep your body healthy and better able to resist chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease. The Mediterranean diet also includes fruits and vegetables, seafood and legumes, olive oil, nuts, and beans. The Mediterranean diet defines proper food combinations and, together with the natural health benefits of the foods themselves, provides a healthy, balanced diet that is easy to stick to.

Here's Why it Works

While the Mediterranean diet is not designed to bolster weight loss, the foods offered on its menus are conducive to the type of healthy life style that will encourage your body naturally to shed excess pounds. The very nature of the foods you eat on this diet plan is satisfying, filling, and delicious. You will not feel deprived, therefore you will not be tempted to go fishing for carbs and sweets to satisfy unhealthy cravings.

The Mediterranean diet cook book will enhance the health benefits of the foods contained on your list of acceptable diet foods since it teaches you the proper ways to prepare them, and the best combinations to get the most nutritional boost. It is not enough to eat only those foods on the diet food list, they still must be prepared correctly to glean maximum benefits from them.

Olive oil is important in food preparation on the Mediterranean diet because it offers the best fat for your body. Olive oil brings the "good" fat that helps lower the "bad" cholesterol in your body, and it is also an anti-oxidant which helps your body lower and stabilize free radicals. Still, despite its benefits, olive oil needs to be used in moderate amounts.

The Mediterranean diet contains foods that are, for the most part, unprocessed. Provided you do not over-cook or process them, foods like fruits and vegetables, nuts and cereals are fine. For this reason, the diet calls for preparing your meals from scratch.

It is because of the few restrictions in the Mediterranean diet food list that it works, even though some foods that are not necessarily considered dietary are allowed in small portions. The diet provides for moderate servings of eggs, dairy, and other foods you might not normally associate with a healthy diet. Discuss the benefits of the Mediterranean diet with your physicist or nutritionist to find out more about the foods offered, and how, when ate in combination, they promote a healthy lifestyle.

Healthy Breakfast Foods for Vegetarians

Vegetarians, because of what they eliminate from their diet, have to make special considerations in their diet. With the foods they do eat they must make sure they are getting the proper nutrition, and it is always better to get our nutrition through diet than supplementation. Here we will talk about five foods typically eaten at breakfast that can be consumed by most vegetarian diets (not of course vegan diets), and the high nutrition they all have:

1. Yogurt. This food has been listed by the New England Journal of Medicine as one of the top five foods that promote weight loss. Yogurt is high in protein, and has whey protein which is found naturally in yogurt. Tests on mice have verified that those groups that were fed and equal amount of calories but had a high-protein diet gained 42% less weight. They also gained more lean muscle mass.

2. Eggs. The great thing about eggs is they deliver a high amount of protein, which is great for breakfast because it keeps you satisfied longer. This you get much more out of similar calorie content than if you get them from a bagel. The bad news about eggs has to do with their reputation: they are quite high in cholesterol. It has been shown, however that for much of the harmful cholesterol in eggs, it is offset with its B vitamins, and they are linked to avoiding heart disease. So if you are healthy and limit your intake to 7-10 eggs a week, you should have no health issues with cholesterol.

3. Oatmeal. Oatmeal has historically been a staple in lower and middle class diets in the British Isles, and for good reason. First, porridge as it is known there is packed with dietary fiber, which means that it stays with you longer. Secondly, it is a “slow-release” carbohydrate, and means it keeps insulin at constant levels. Since high insulin levels signal your body to store fat, taking away these insulin spikes will help your body burn fat.

4. Raspberries. Berries are always great because of their fiber content, but raspberries top the list. A cup will give you about eight grams of fiber, which is similar to some types of beans. The Journal of Nutrition has recommended eating more fiber to lose weight. They sight as an example a two-year study that found that by increasing fiber by eight grams for every 1000 calories consumed resulted in a weight loss of about 4.5 pounds.

5. Peanut Butter. It’s all about nuts, one of the top foods for weight loss (as long as you eat them in moderation). High in protein, fiber ad healthy fats, they will curb your appetite while providing a high level of nutrients. Since they are plant-based they do not contain saturated fats or cholesterol, so they are good for your heart. But again beware of eating too many, as they will add to your calorie intake in a hurry.

These are five breakfast foods that can be combined to give you a broad-based nutritional mix. Always keep in mind that more isn’t necessarily better, as all of them have something (cholesterol, calories, and fructose) that you don’t want to overdo on. But they have one thing we should always look for in breakfast food: it gets the day started right and you won’t soon have hunger cravings.

Healthy Mexican Food

Mexican cuisine is a style of food that began in Mexico, and is widely known for its vibrant flavor and amazing decoration. Rice, beans, tortillas, and a wide variety of spices are commonly used in many Mexican dishes, along with beef, pork, chicken, and a range of different peppers. Mexican recipes vary from region to region, but many of the same original ideas are still seen all over the globe today. Mexican cuisine is typically cooked in large amounts of grease and fat, making it one of the most fattening styles of food in the world.

Although authentic Mexican food can be unhealthy, there are many great recipes available for healthy Mexican meals. One ingredient that can easily be replaced is grease, which is usually a staple when making dishes prepared with tortillas. Many Mexican recipes involve frying tortillas, such as taquitos, tacos, and even tostadas. While the fried tortillas are usually the main portion of the dish, using oil to prepare them adds unhealthy fat and caloric intake. One alternative would be using soft tortillas, such as making soft tacos rather than frying the tortillas. There are also several recipes that involve tortillas without being fried, such as quesadillas or baked tortilla chips.

Another problem that can make Mexican food unhealthy is the amount of sodium in the dishes, which gives the food the strong flavor many love. The excessive use of salt and salt-based spices can be eliminated, but the flavor can still remain with the use of hot chili peppers and fresh vegetables such as onions and bell peppers. Rice can be prepared with low sodium chicken broth rather than using salt, and bean dishes can be prepared with the use of fresh ingredients as well.

Milk is another popular ingredient used in Mexican cooking, along with other high fat dairy products such as cheese and sour cream. While these are key ingredients in many popular recipes, the dairy products can be replaced with low-fat or fat-free versions in order to lower the fat intake. Using low-fat milk in a recipes rather than whole milk can reduce the caloric intake by almost half, depending on the amount of milk and other dairy products used in the dish.

Eggs are a main ingredient found in various breakfast dishes, and although they are healthy, many egg recipes are packed full of fat and calories. Huevos rancheros, a popular dish around the world, are typically prepared using whole eggs, oil, various salsas, and fried tortillas. Egg whites can be used rather than whole eggs, and tortillas can be prepared in the oven rather than in a frying pan with oil. Fresh salsas and peppers can be added in place of salt and seasonings, and the dish will still come out tasting amazing.

With the rising incidence of obesity occurring, it is best to find healthier alternatives for many popular dishes. Because Mexican food is well known for its high fat and calorie total, it is important to try low-fat and fat-free alternatives since they still contain the bold flavor most Mexican cuisine is known for. A delicious meal does not have to be full of fat, and healthy Mexican food can still taste amazing with the help of low-fat ingredients and fresh vegetables and spices.

Why Eat Healthy Food?

We are usually bombarded by commercials of unhealthy food. So if there's more unhealthy food out there, why should we fight it and start eating healthy?

An article on this subject matter will never be enough to fully explain why healthy eating is important. Therefore, for the time being, we will be discussing the importance of eating healthy food for our body's proper growth.

We all know that our body is composed of living cells and that these cells hold us together and makes us whole. Cells come in different forms. I believe you've heard of the red and white blood cells, which are the components of our blood. Our organs and glands are also made up of cells, each unique in its structure and use.

You might ask, "so why the discussion of cells?" Well, these cells help keep us alive, and these cells fights off diseases. They are constantly moving, defending and holding us together. If this is how vital a cell is in order for us to live, will you allow one of these cells to die?

We eat food not just to satisfy our hunger. Whenever our tummy growls, it is not just a signal that it needs to digest on food, but its also a signal that our cells are in need of nutrients. And here is where the tricky part comes in.

When we consume food, it is out digestive systems that break down the food. And as I mention earlier, our organs are also made up of cells. Therefore, when your food is digested by your cell-made organs these food not only turn into energy but your cell-made organs absorb its nutrients and that made it possible for the cells to grow and multiply. And when your cells grow and multiply, they contribute to your growth and physical development. Your cells need nutrient-filled food so that they can grow, protect and multiply properly. And if they are not properly fed, they can cause harm to your body.

One of the harmful effects of improper cell growth is the formation of tumor. Tumor is not synonymous with cancer of course, but most of then not, tumor will lead to it. So in order to avoid such a devastating illness from afflicting you, then we should start practicing healthy eating.

Proper cell growth, maturity and distribution start from having a healthy eating habit. Do not wait until diseases have afflicted you before you'll start eating right. There is no age limit in starting have a better way of living, that's why it is never too late to start now!

7 Healthy Food Substitutes

It’s a new year and many are anxious to start their diet off on the right foot, maybe lose a few pounds, eat better and make smarter food choices overall. Here is a list of great, healthy food substitutes for your usual choices that will help you keep your New Year’s Resolution. They are lower in fat, calories but high in taste!

Love chocolate milk but not so fond of the stomach pain and gas you get afterward? There is a new healthy choice available and it’s not soy! As a lactose intolerant woman, I typically drink soy and rice milk, but my latest choice is wonderful, especially in chocolate and it’s Almond Milk! It has such a clean taste and you’d swear you were drinking the real thing! You’ll want to look in your grocer’s healthy/organic or dairy case. They offer a shelved brand as well, but the refrigerated kind is the best. This yummy treat is from the makers of nuts, Blue Diamond Natural Almond Breeze. Even if you’re not lactose intolerant, it only has 120 calories and has less fat than even soy so drink up!

Do your kids adore grilled cheese sandwiches but avoid them due to the lactose? One great option for cheese slices is ‘Veggie Slices’ found in the vegetarian section of the dairy case and/or produce area. They offer flavors like cheddar, mozzarella, American, jalapeno, smoked provolone and the best thing is they are low calorie, cholesterol free and have 0g of trans fat! The Veggie Slices brand also offers regular bricks of “cheese” as well as shredded and they are all fantastic, you’d swear they were dairy!

The avocado is a great delicacy and when you want to whip up some guacamole or just put some slices on your salad it’s great to know there is a low fat option. A large avocado trademarked as the “SlimCado” let’s you eat this wonderful fruit (that’s right, if you didn’t know it, the avocado is actually a fruit!) without piling on the calories. It is still meaty like a regular avocado but does have a slightly higher water content, so it’s best used in guacamole. These are about 3 times the size of a regular one and a little can go a long way.

Canned fruit and veggies, if you’re not careful in your selection, can have loads of syrup, sugar and salt! This is not great if you are looking to make healthier choices. You do have options though! Fresh is always best if you can get it and if it is affordable, next best is frozen as it has been proven to have all of the nutrient content as fresh, and last would be canned. With the economy pushing grocery prices to a record high in the past few years, more people are turning to canned goods. Look at the label and ensure that it has no added salt or sugar. When looking at the ingredients you’ll want to avoid anything that has syrup, corn syrup, fructose, sucrose, or added sweeteners. These add unwanted sodium and calories that are not needed. If you can’t get any without these ingredients, be sure to drain the juices and wash the contents well before using.

Is your weakness cookies? Like many, cookies are a favored treat and comfort food. After all, most are loaded with butter, margarine or some type of hydrogenated oil, loads of sugar and often white flour. There are many new organic and non-organic healthy options that include whole grains, a lot less sugar and healthier oils used. A great one that I adore is the Kashi TLC cookie. They are chewy but add some crunch and one cookie is enough for me, so one box can go a long way. The flavor choices are happy trail mix, oatmeal dark chocolate and oatmeal raisin flax. These powerhouses offer low sugar, seven whole grains, 0g of cholesterol, 3g of fiber and only 130 calories per large cookie!

If you enjoy popsicles and sorbets as a fun fruity treat, here’s a super easy recipe to make some at home to avoid paying a premium on packaged healthy options at the grocery store. I really like Edy’s fruit bars and they are a fantastic, cool treat option! However, with their recent price hike I refuse to pay their now $4 price tag so I’m making my own. I have little Tupperware cups with lids (about ¾-1 full cup in size) Use whatever fruit you have or buy some fresh or frozen fruit. My favorite is blueberry-mango. I put frozen blueberries and store bought 100% pure frozen mango pulp into my food processor. Give it a few pulses until really smooth then pour into the cups to freeze. This is great for kids! No added …
